I'm trying to install a Hopkins 7 pin wiring kit. It needs aux power, L/R blinkers, brake, reverse, and ground (I'm omitting a brake controller since the trailer doesn't have brakes). I found an eight pin connector in the back passenger side panel that I think should be for trailer wiring, and the green and white wire gets 12v when the brakes are depressed, but i can't pin out any signal for reverse or the turn signals. It also has three pins with switched 12v. Huh? What is this plug?

I also have a 3 wire plug just above the spare tire that doesn't seem to pin out for what I need. From what I've read here in in the right area, but not quite.

Any tips for where to splice for what i need?

If you bought the correct plug'n'play Hopkins converter/adapter there is no cutting or splicing. You simply unplug the tail light harness from the body harness on each side, and plug the Hopkins in between them. The instructions that come with the harness are vehicle specific and are easy to follow.

This is the Hopkins harness you need if you don't want to cut and splice:

If you bought a universal type harness then you have to bust out the test light/meter and have a helper work the brakes and turn signals while you test wires in the tail light plugs..

FYI, the tail light plugs are both 6 pin (3 over 3) plugs, and are accessed from behind the plastic quarter panel trim. There is no OEM harness in the quarter panels that is specifically for trailer wiring.

Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately I'm leaving this weekend and I was too dumb to order that plug n play kit ahead of time, so I bought the universal one locally.

The Hopkins converter that is plug and play is only a 4 wire output and does not contain the reverse signal although that could be added seperately without to much effort.

My 96 has a 2 pin connector in the middle of the rear cross member under the tailgate. I tapped into that for bumper mounted reverse lights

Have NEVER heard of a direct fit/plug in kit to install a 7 pin trailer harness onto an 80 series. Wish there was, as I want/need one. The correct 4 pin kits plug in between existing, normally used plugs, like a jumper.

Bringing this back from the dead.

I just cut off my rear crossmember in preparation for installing my 4x4 Labs bumper. The previous owner had a 4 pin trailer harness vampire tapped into the tail lights. I don't have a trailer and although I assume it works, it looks nasty. There is a plug in the middle of the body that appears to be for a trailer harness but after searching the googles I can't find anything that connects to it.

That unused plug in the middle that you see is for the auxiliary sub-tank that we didn't get as an option in NA. The correct location for the 4-wire harness to attach is under the right rear corner of the truck, inboard of the frame rail. As @inkpot describes above, the plug-and-play 4-wire harness is inserted between two normally connected plugs on the truck.

My wagon has a dealer installed 4 pole convertor behind the rear interior quarter panel. it's glued to the inside of the actual quarter panel. You may want to look in there....of course if you don't see a trailer harness plug then perhaps its not there.
