My 80's been in storage for a number of months. I pulled it out, did a couple things to it and drove it 1,300 miles to Colorado. As I was coming into Boulder yesterday it started to miss at 3/4 to full throttle (which is all the time at elevation with a 3FE). When I stopped to fuel it would go away untill I was on the road for 45 minutes or so again. By the time I got close to Boulder though it was doing it alot and even below half throttle.

I tried some dry gas and fuel injector cleaner in previous tanks on the way out with the hopes that it was some bad gas. Before I left I replaced the fuel filter which looked pretty gunky. This morning I got in and drove all the way up I70 towards the Eisenhower tunnel, at George town I had to pull off as the missing started again. I let the truck sit, for a bit then drove back down to Golden. I swung in Slee's and talked to Robbie for a bit. He seemed to first think that I should check the EFI relay, then as I described it more thought it could be my fuel pump going bad. This could be as its at 186,000 miles on the original right now. I'm about to go swap out the plugs (which are a bit old) and take a look at the EFI relay wire that Robbie was talking about. I'm really hoping its not the pump.

I wanted to post this to see if any of you experts out there had any suggestions that I might be overlooking. I'm in a bit of a pinch for time and gotta get this sucker figured out. Thanks in advance.

BTW, Robbie, thanks for taking the time advise me, I know you were busy with the yellow bus there. I appreciate it.

no big appetite to second guess robbie and christo here I think :D. I would upgrade the relay wire first. I would also add the fuel pump regulator as a possibility. Try the 3FE yahoo board or the 60/62 board here for more help.

oh and did you check the coolant to see if it's dropped?

Wire to the relay made my truck run much better.

Sounds like you may be losing pressure for fuel though...hmm.

fuel pressure regulator.......

that is the cure all if you hang out on the 3FE yahoo list.

Well, after pulling the plugs and replacing them, I thought I had found the culprit. They had major deposits on them, if fact I can't believe some were even firing at all. They smelled of terpentine, making me think that they got messed up from bad gas. After a short drive though the problem persisted. I went down to the Toyota dealership here in Boulder to see if they even had a pump in stock, which they didn't plus they wanted $355 for it. Yikes. I bought a new fuel filter and swapped that in. I'm still crossing my fingers for an easy fix. I'll have to take a peak at the pressure regulator tomorrow, that might make sense. Thanks guys.

Geez Up,

What a place to break down....at Friggin' Slee Offroad! :flipoff2:

Sounds like a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator to me... I'm about to replace them all anyway, just to get it done in the garage instead of on the road.

What color were the deposits on the plugs? Were they black and gooey? Were they gray and ash? Were they white/gray and hard? Spark plug inspection is an incredible tool to diagnose malfunctions. More feedback/info.
