90 dx pickup front axle noise

I have a 90 dx pickup and the front left and right axles are making a rattling noise when I hit rough road while driving . its not a solid axle has the cv axles with manual locking hubs. if I grab the axle where it goes into the back of the hub it has play. I haven't tore the wheel and hub off yet but im assuming theres an axle nut behind the locking hub?? or maybe a missing washer? has anyone ran into this problem before? I guess my main question is if its a pain in the ass to remove the manual locking hub or not?

Well, if this was a solid axle I would say the bronze bushings are worn inside your spindle. But since this is IFS ... I have no clue.

Removing the lockout hub is not hard ... except for the cone-washers. Those can be a PITA. Just six bolts, six nuts, and a snap ring ... and those damn cone-washers.

Are you in 4wd? 2wd?

Put it in 2wd, put it on stands so both wheels are off the ground and start spinning and wiggling stuff. Doing that you should be able to iD loose spindle nuts, bad wheel bearings or ball joints.

Put it in 4wd, lock the hubs and spin the wheels and see if there are any funky noises coming from the hubs or front diff.

Also for rattling noise, check your shocks, sway bars, tie rods or any other metal compoments that may have come loose while you are at it

Check the anti-swaybar end links. The rubber bushings fall apart and then you get rattles. Very easy fix.

ill try removing the locking hubs. its definetly the axle on the hub end not the diff end. i can grab it and shake it and hear the same noise it makes while driving. . it feels loose....... or worse maybe something is f'd up or loose. thanks for the help guys!
