Seriously, I once got 20.4 mpg on a run from Mammoth down to Ridgecrest. (Filled up just before I left Mammoth, filled up the next morning in R/C, and did the math.) ~5000ft elevation change over about 200 miles, plus taking it nice and easy.

I always hesitate to post it up, 'cause I figure no one will believe me. :D

Oh, and if you think about it, I actually wasted money by filling up in Mammoth since it's so expensive there and I still had half a tank or so, but I just really wanted to try it as an experiment.

What's funny about this post is you actually traveled to Ridgecrest--do you live there? Man, that place is depressing--just sayin.

Low MPG?

Wait a second, I am on my way Saturday to pick up a 94' w/factory locks, the LCs get bad mileage?

If I had known that I would have..... still got it because LCs ROCK !:grinpimp:

P.S.
80s Cruiser Gods help! How do I change my login name from ToddsFJ60 to something relating to my new 94' I am picking up tomorrow? !!!!

You can't change your user name and keep your post count. Only woody can do that. You can create a new account.

Has anyone here tried "pulse and glide" technique?

Driving technique: exploring 'Pulse and Glide' - MetroMPG.com

Pulse and glide works like this: let's say you're on a road where you want to go 60 km/h. Instead of driving along at a steady 60, you instead accelerate to 70 (that's the pulse), and then coast in neutral with the engine off down to 50 (that's the glide). That's it. Rinse and repeat. And repeat. And repeat...

I thought this was known as "old codger" technique! I didn't know it was an actual technique and figured people that drove that way were just retarded or it was time to surrender their license.

Thanks, I only have 6 posts so the new account route wouldn't be so bad.
I'll be back!

Something must have changed in the Forum software over the past few years. Landtoy80 changed his name to Nimrod over the Christmas holidays a couple of years ago. I have no idea why...

I know that when tofudebeest did it, he had to get woody to do it for him.

I get between 8-10 mpg on 315's. I always figure I could drive a tercel..... me I would rather get hit in the 80:grinpimp:

80 is cheap life insurance

I routinely get 300 miles/tank (21 gallons approx) with 285's, Kaymar rear bumper, MT sliders, and OME 2.5" heavy lift 20% town/80% highway going 80mph. 87 octane cheapy crappy ARCO.

Still not worth doing a diesel conversion unless one plans to drive it another 200K miles!

gosh you hear lots of guys say that... but the JDM 80 series owners in Canada who post up MPG in the diesel section are generally all above 25 mpg. I've heard of guys saying 28.

AND on the trail idling around it increases to 200-300% better on fuel than the gasser, as diesel air/fuel volume changes. Where the gasser stays at around 14.7 to 1 stoichiometric ratio.

I took my 91 on a wheeling trip and the 3fe drank half a tank before I could blink. My BJ60 would not have left full in the same time period.

Highway to highway(apples to apples) the diesel only gets 30% better at best. Off road IMOP it is anywhere from 100% to 400% better on fuel consumption. That's truly where they shine.

my wife drives like that. I guess I should stop giving her sh*t for it. naaa I'll still give her sh*t cuz that is annoying! If I was in the vicinity of anyone doing that I would go postal:steer:

Taking the roof rack and tent off was good for an increase of about 2 mpg in my case.

milage

I used to get 16 mpg and has since switched to 315's and now I'm at 12-13 mpg. Has anyone seen chages with switching out to a K&N or flowmaster I know on my cherokee with 35"s I was getting 19 mpg and it had both K&N and flowmaster. Just trying to get a little more power and mpg.

I get around 15 mpg if I keep the hwy speeds under 72mph avg (4.56 R&P, 315 MTs). Sorry to hear about your single digit mpg!

Since you have a tent up top, can you build a wind fairing?

Mine has averaged 9 MPG no matter what I do...:crybaby:

I wouldn't put a K&N on an ex-wifes car:censor:

I got 12.5 mpg in the cruiser I just bought. Its a 97 with 37's and 4,88s downhill mostly, slc to vegas.

Nope. I tossed my K&N after a few months of hoping for better mileage.

All I got was the same mileage and a thick layer of oil all over the inside of the intake tube.

best ive ever got was 12mpg and that was on a cross country trip. on the hillier sections it hit as low as 9.
