just bought an 89 fj62.Love it ! but I average 7 MPG is that normal?
Please help...

Should be getting 12-13. I’ve found highway, stop and go, air pressure, etc, etc make very, very little difference...

7 is bad. I get 9 and mine is running rich and on low compression.

@ZORO,
If you are in Malibu, California shoot me a pm. I am the president of the L.A. County Trailcrew 4x4 club and we can get you some help if you're willing to get your hands dirty.

There is no free lunch. :)

I thought this could not be right
The 4x4 language light is always on
( even thaw the button is press out)
Do you think it could be related ?

Randy I would love to take you up on that offer.I am near Westwood but would gladly come and see you in Malibu.I don't have much experience on mechanic but have no problem getting my hand dirty

Have you?

Checked your timing?
Replaced your air filter
Got good denso or ngk plugs?
Checked your valve clearance?

Could be a bad efi thermal sensor or O2 sensor. Both can cause poor mileage if bad.

Also are you running stock gearing and stock tires?

I started at 9mpg in my 62
Water temp Temp sensor on thermostat housing bad, engine was warm, computer thought it was cold.
Reset timing, adjusted valves, changed air filter, replaced PCV valve (easy and cheap stuff)
Reset idle via throttle position sensor from 900 down to 650rpms

Now getting 11.4 city, highway hits 15.5

all stock, 12 mpg for a mix of heavy traffic, city driving, and highway. Very little variability.

15 - 16 mpg on the highway.
