First time Ole Ruby died on the road on me and I am suspecting it's the alternator. I have been having issues running through batteries lately, but this time the battery was on day 2 with about 50 miles on it. Driving home from work the radio started going in and out before she slowed to an idle and puttered along. I was literally 200 yards from the house so let her putter, but she died about 100 yards later. Not even a reattempt at starting. I am assuming she had been running on battery power and died when that gave out.

I reached out to a local reputable shop who is going to rebuild the alternator for me - assuming it's OEM. If it isn't then is there a recommendation on alternators? I came across quite a bit of info on here, but it appears it's all pretty old as I couldn't find the options listed - i.e. green mean etc... I emailed them but have yet to receive a response.

Does this check as alternator to you guys? Also, anyone have any videos of the replacement? I came across an 80 series with smog, but wasn't sure how similar the two are.

There is a lot in the archives about how to remove, but a lot of discord on the actual best method - lower, upper etc... Pulling the PS vs. not etc...

Sorry, last question, but what belts would one recommend, or any other component worth swapping while in there? Any recommended suppliers since I am sure OEM is out?

Thanks for any assist here.

Sounds like a bad alternator to me. Mine was overcharging and killing batteries.

I ended up going with a Power Bastards high output alternator because I plan to run 2 batteries and some other stuff down the road. So, wanted something that could handle it.

You shouldn’t need to pull the PS. Removing the alternator is pretty straight forward. Loosen the bolts keeping it tight and loosen the tensioner as loose as possible.

As for belts, I use Gates and Brando. I don’t have a smog pump, so my belts might be different than yours.

Easy to check the alternator with a voltmeter. You can get a stock alternator at O'Reilly's at a good price. I had a Mean Green which worked great but I had dual batteries , fridge etc. If you are stock, just go to O'Reilly's.

OEM belts are no problem

awesome. Thanks... new belts ordered... picked up a new alternator and installing today. Will check with the voltmeter at the battery once complete and go from there.
