I’ve got a weird issue and not sure they are related. 4Runner will not start randomly and no starter clicking or anything.

At times it will stall and may or may not crank afterwards.

Are there any common issues like I’ve seen in the 80 series forum regarding efi relays or fuel pump relays or anything?

getting no starter click, id look at the ignition switch and main battery cables.

I replaced it and it seems like bad quality so I have a new one from O’Reillys to try.

Intermittent starter issues can be worn contacts. I would also check your battery cables and make sure they are not corroded, and they are tight.

Yep. I recently cleaned up the battery cables. When this happens there is no power at the starter.

As I recall the 1987 has a starter relay on the passenger fender. It's a known failure point and some folks just replace it with a standard Bosch relay. Also, if you have a manual check the clutch switch.

I was thinking about adding a starter relay as Autos didn’t come with one.

I’ve tried starting in both park and neutral. No change. I adjusted the linkage.

I had issues with my 1989 22re Auto not starting occasionally and had to install a starter relay and it fixed the issue. I didn’t have stalling problems though.

This is the article I followed,

I replaced the previously replaced Rock ignition switch with one from O’Reillys. Used a little body grease from Mr. T since these are aftermarket parts and it started right up. It feels better already like much better quality. Hopefully that was the issue.

I saw this article awhile back and collected some parts for the mod. However, I haven't been able to locate a relay plug with larger gauge wire and would like to figure out where to look for some connectors if anyone knows where to locate them.

The solution is to get the relay connector with loose terminals that you crimp on the wire of your choice. Not pre-wired connectors. You just need to get crimp pliers that do roll-over/open barrel crimps. Get extra terminals.

Thanks! I have a nice crimp plier I can use.

The white wire coming out of the fuse box has been cut. Is there a repair wire part number for this?

Started the 4Runner up again today a couple of times to warm it up and look at the timing. The new starter switch is tight and notchy compared to the last that was kinda loose. On the 3rd time it wouldn't start or even try again. I noticed I'm getting a lot of codes now: 3,6,10,11,14.

A little update. We decided to unwrap the wire section from the ignitor over the cylinder head that goes under the plenum and found bare wires, cooked insulation, and also the O2 sensor wire sitting on the exhaust manifold with a burned section. Did a liquid electrical tape field repair but thinking seriously about rerouting this harness up on the firewall for less heat and maybe some kind of heat wrap. Wondering if I should add a plug on the plenum side.

Does anyone know the wire gauge for the ignitor harness?

Update. Rebuilt the ignitor harness that goes across the engine with new wire and insultherm. I rerouted it up on the firewall. I replaced the starter contacts and all was good until this morning when it wouldn't start again. No power at starter lead so I'm wondering about a bad efi relay or broken wire somewhere in the harness. Adding a starter relay will not help as I understand it feeds off the signal I'm having trouble with.

I was under the impression a 1987 would have a starter relay. 1986+ as I recall.
