A buddy of mine is looking at two diesel toyotas and asked for my opinion, I figured I'd put it to the list....
Price on the two rigs is the same
I don't have much for details besides that. Mileage is similar per year.

the first is an hj60, 1986. Clean paint, 2H motor. 4 speed w/ h41. 12volt.

The second is a 91 4runner. 2.8l motor. 5 speed. IFS.

Either vehicle will be a daily driver for rough paved roads, frequent stops, and rough dirt roads. Very little real wheelin, but some sand and some mud now and then.

All thoughts welcome!!

sounds like a postie delivery driver.
the HJ60 is heavy so rough roads are not it's upside. the HJ60has much more room inside if that is important. the surf is a smoother ride and the 2.8 has good power and great fuel economy.
with out further information it will be ahrd to determine which will be better deal for what he iwll be using it for..
cheers

I agree! :)
I suppose that mostly I'm looking for general trends-- anything to be wary of with the 4runner vs the cruiser. I imagine that the cruiser will be smoother (generally), easier to fix, and roomier, but the 4runner will get better mileage and more chance to break the front end.

I think I'm leaning towards telling him to get the 'Runner so that I can get away with the "Gee, I know how to wrench on cruisers, but I just don't know how to fix your 4runner in this 104 degree heat." :)
