Hi guys, I'm fresh FJ60 owner. It's hot here in MO, and I noticed that my temp gauge goes really high (see picture). Engine doesn't overheat. It just stays in that spot.
First I thought that maybe fan clutch is the reason for this, so i put the new Aisin, but temp gauge acts the same way...
There are no coolant leaks and you can drive like this without over heating (after changing fan clutch I drove for over 40 miles). Picture was taken after the road trip, at idle.
Am I over reacting here?

The White zone is ok according to Toyota. The red zone is not.
If the radiator is ancient and cruddy inside, it won't cool as well as a new one.
After highway driving then waiting at a stop light, idling (for example in the summer) the needle position that you show is normal. All the hot metal is heating up the coolant which is circulating slowly with little air flowing through the radiator. After a while the temps will come down.

How do you know the engine isn’t overheating?
I’d fish around with an IR temp gun at various times in various places to verify. Temp sender could be bad, T stat could be bad, could have an air pocket…

I'm below 200F across multiple different points on the engine block, sensor, thermostat, radiator and etc. I'm assuming that's normal range.

Well there you go.
Sounds like the gauge or the sender.

There are a few threads about overheating going on currently.

I guess i will change the sender first, little bit cheaper than gauge, ha!

Look into the gauge. I think there are some mods/tweaks you can do.

But yeah, sender is basic maintenance at this point.

Check this out..

Just in case you haven't flushed your engine in a while, start there. Yes the gauge maybe the issue, but the flush and new fluid is cheap insurance.

Do this sooner rather than later. I cooked a new head gasket in my 60 without the factory temp gauge getting as high as yours is now. Your cooling system needs help, and the place to start is with some dependable temperature information from the IR gun, and, for me, an aftermarket temp gauge. Good luck with your search.

After reading your post #4, I would do as @RevISK suggests in his post #5.
