Just rebuilt my 8274 with a build date somewhere in 1977 or 78 so it has the 4 pin remote plug. It quit working about a year and a half ago after pulling out an 80 stuck nose down in a ditch. I installed the brake rebuild kit, lower housing seals/bearings, drain and fill plugs, and made up new 1/0 power cables. It was even well cleaned and painted. I thought my old issue was due to the 30+ year old brittle coroded cables and an almost dead battery. The previous owner replaced some wiring between the solenoids and may have replaced the solenoids too.

So today I mount it back in the bumper, connect the remote, flip the switch to out and it quickly fires to life. I ran it for a little while to be sure all the gears were well coated in oil. Then i flipped the switch to in and.... click..click. All the connections between solenoids look good. I did not replace the 3 cables from the solenoids to the motor as they looked fine.

Which solenoid should be the culprit?

Any leads on the better solenoids at a good price?

Thanks very much to everyone who posted their rebuilds here on MUD. I could not have done it without these detailed threads. All I did was search the word rebuild, and read for hours.

Hi All:

Lash, sorry I don't have a definite answer for you, though I suspect it may be a wiring issue at the solenoids.

Have you tried here? Warn Industries - Contact Us

Good luck!

Alan

Thanks Alan.

I posted to their help site 24 hours ago. I'll post the answer if I get one.

Throw all the solenoids out and buy an albright solenoid - one of yours is toast and the rest will be going soon. Been there done that - you should see when they stick on, things really get fun then:)

Well I never heard back from Warn from the email I sent to the "contact us" service address. So I called them and with only one transfer got someone on the line who knew his stuff and had plenty of advice. He directed me to my local Warn service and parts store to buy two Warn solenoids for the IN circuit since the OUT was working fine. He said the OUT solenoids usually outlast the IN because most people freespool the line out instead of powering out. He even emailed the build date correct wiring diagram in .pdf form to me. I replaced the two solenoids with green wire connected to them (upper left and lower right when facing). Cost was just over $70 and a half an hour of fun. I wound my cable back on and its ready to go. One of the two solenoids I replaced is probably fine, so I kept them both a back-ups. Trial and error will have to determine which one is the good one.

Good luck with your winch repairs.
