A great deal would be $400 or less. $600 is ok, looks like everything is there. Would try checking the cable for frays/breaks/flat spots. Try to check that the free spool pops in and out and that you can spool cable out. The two used winches I’ve bought have had broken wires in the plugs ($30 for new plug), so check operation if a battery is handy. If you spool in and stop then pull in the cable the brake should stop it from coming back out. If you get it you should pop off the top and flip it upside down to drain the oil and replace the oil. Check the mfg date code, from the pics it looks 80s or newer (plastic plug), which would be ok for the price. See if the guy is stuck on price though. Looks to be reasonably well taken care of considering the care and order taken to take the photo-everything is pictured. Should have 125’ of cable.

$600 is a bit much for an older 8274 because your going to have to open it up and do a rebuild which will add up quickly$$...clutch, upper rebuild kit, lower rebuild kit and other stuff while your in there parts.

Very good chance there's water inside with little oil if any (like mine) and rusty gears.

Like said above, 3 to $400 unless its a newer one which would be in the $600 to $800 range and you dont have to open up...

All above responses are correct...HOWEVER...if it's as good as it looks, and if it works, no water in the case, the wire is in good shape, free spool works etc., and you don't have to pay a ton to get it shipped to you...that's a very fair price and I would jump on it.

I paid $550 - but that included a pretty cool soft top that might work.
The guy had the winch hooked up and gave me a complete demonstration.
I’m headed home tonight - I’ll probably take a look inside tomorrow.

Great...ya, make sure and open it up and see if any oil in there...hopefully not any water...

In this pic is how much oil should be in there, its not a lot at all.

Thanks Woodsman44 - I picture always explains more!!
As long as there is no water in it (and some gear oil) should I just change the gear oil and install it onto my rig?
Out of caution, am I better off breaking the whole thing down now and rebuilding it?

Mine was running when I bought it; I rebuilt the whole thing before installing and trusting it. They're pretty easy to work on, and it will give you some peace of mind. But be aware that there's a rabbit hole of improvements and hop-ups you can succumb to when rebuilding it!

Detergent free sae 30. I didn’t do anything to mine prior to using it. Sounds like your po knew what he was about. Personally I would run it. Make sure the free spool works and the brake doesn’t drag when you try to pull cable out. That’s worth fixing and isn’t too hard and won’t take you deep in the rabbit hole.

My first one looked way worse than that. More water then oil, but it still cleaned up 100% and works great to this day.

I used 80w-90 gear oil in mine vs the hard to find non-detergent SAE30, and it's been fine for years. They are straight cut gears, so almost any lube will work. I used gear oil, since It was close at hand.

What do I use as a gasket material when I put the top back on?
Also - what lube do you use on the round end piece (where the end of the drum goes)?

I used gear oil in mine too; unless you're going to be using the winch in the arctic it works just fine.

I used a thin smear of Toyota "seal packing", i.e. FIPG.

I smeared grease in mine.
