I guess I can give a final final update. Chad got overwhelmed with the rebuild project, had another kid, and has a new job. He decided he needed to let it go. It went to my Landcruiser buddy and the two of us spent the summer getting it up and running. It's now completely back together and up and running. Just needs a new CAT, sway bar end links, and a couple other small things. Should be smogged, registered, and being a daily driver for his son in the next couple weeks. I will get pics soon.
Wow crazy story. That's a unicorn, glad it's back in action.
I had a 79 4x4 pickup & an 81 Mirage edition (1 of 300). Sorry for your friends loss and find... Glad this beauty is in the right hands. Have the new owner post up the build so we can follow the progress.

I forgot about this thread. I will talk with Carl today and get some pics of the truck. It's smogged, registered, and back on the road. He is currently driving it until he gets the seats and seat belts properly mounted. He doesn't want his teenage son driving it until he is confident that it is safe. Also needs an alignment.
