81 Hilux for $1K

I am considering buying a 81 Hilux for $1k. It has a problem with its transmission. I was told that the 4th gear works, but the rest gears make a lot of noise. I have to drive 60 miles home with the lousy and noisy transmission. It is a good buy even at $1k, right? I will rebuild the transmission, L50, according to my research if I make it home.

It is only 2WD.

I would not pay $1k for that. I would not replace the L50 with another L50. I would look for a W56.

If it's a solid frame and body I would pay 1K for that! A 1st gen with that clean of a body would never be seen that cheap around here in illinois.

Depending on how bad the bearings are in the trans it might be repairable without replacing the trans. But like pappy mentioned- a W56 would be a better option.

2WD with a bad tranny is a $500 truck tops IMO. Take a look on CL. You'll see a ton of the 1st gen trucks in turn-key condition for $800-$1200 all day long.

You'll have to find a tranny and replace it. That's worth $600 if you factor in your time.
