The system very tightly monitors wheel spin and via braking can shift power around automatically to the tire with traction and the vehicle moves forward. Most traction systems SUCK therefore they have a poor reputation. The 100's is first-rate and extremely effective. I think the reason I couldn't climb the same hill with my locker(s) on is because they tend to pull you to the "low side" when the grade isn't completely cambered (?). This is what happened to us. We'd start to climb then slide sideways. The traction system simply pulled us up the snowy/icy 40-degree slope so we could turn around. We actually has forward progress and could have continued up the slope. We were in shock!

The noise? Hee hee! My mechanic forgot the top shock bushing and my rear left shock was loose. He was really embarrased. All is well. That Slee bumper is awesome!

i kinda skipped over a lot of these messages but definitly get an 80. no matter what people say you can not beat a solid axle vehicle. especially with front and rear lockers. they are so much better offroad and you can only do so much with ifs no matter how you try to get around it you cant. i learned that by owning a two door z71 tahoe. so go with the 80. its one of the best thing toyota has made and i know a lot of people can vouch for that. good luck.

Hate to tell ya....it's not the early 90's any more. You're non-acceptance of IFS reminds me of people that still insist on using typewriters because they refuse to learn Microsoft Word and the PC. :D

Hate to tell ya #2....If you draw your conclusion because you compare your locked 80 to a Z71 Tahoe then you're conclusion is correct. IF HOWEVER, you think the same holds true 80 vs 100, both locked F&R, both with equal size tires (like 35's) etc, you're dead wrong, and I've proved that over and over again to many on exremely difficult trails with my 100. If ya come out to AZ, drop me a PM. We'll ride with ya somewhere on a 3.5-4 trail (just low in brush :) ). You'll change yer tune. :)

i can see where your offense is taken. and im sorry about that i didnt mean to say that they are not capable. all landcruisers are capable of course. i would just rather have solid axles. torsions bars mess with ground clearance and ifs tends to not be as tuff. i bet your cruiser would do great compared to mine. i just think that solid axles are a little more reliable offroad. oh and i would love to go wheelin out there. if i get out west i will definitly try to get in touch with you cause you look like an expert. sorry bout the mix up and happy wheelin!

No, no, no...notice the smiley faces. No offense. Come on out and run.

As for durabilty between the two, there are many mixed opinions and facts regarding that. 80's have smaller front axle shafts, birfields are a know weekness, 100's rear axles is semi, not full floating. Who knows. The CV's in my 100 do have 90K miles on them. They are beat to death and still run like new. (???) It's easier throwing a new CV in there than rebuilding a sold axle.

And no, my 100 can't out-do an 80. My/your 80 rules off-road.....though by little. Ground clearance though is notably more on the 100 and that's with torsion bars. Even when flexed out (reducing ground clearance in an IFS rig) the 80's diff housing hangs lower than anywhere on the 100. I often hit/scrape my front diff on my 80 though I can't remember hitting it ever the 100 (???). That's a live axles disadvantage...ground cleearance...though I know you might be seeing these Ford and Chevy trucks who's T-bars hang way down there. The 100 design is not that way. Thakns god! :D

Far more powerful (even when compared to a blown 80).

Not accurate.

The 2UZ V8 has 230 hp and 320 lb-ft torque.

The S/C'ed 1FZ has about 290 hp and about 390 lb-ft torque.

Numbers Dan. Just numbers. And like Todd even admitted, his 100 eats his S/C 80 easily off the line. Mine, at a 12-percent disadvantage (from the 35's) eats a blown 80 w'4.88's. Just does. What can I say? (Though who really cares?)

Some 80's are more blown than others too...:0

:D :D :D

Seriously though, numbers are puzzling. My friend with his 300-whatever, 345, whatever HP in high Escalade can pull away from me at a red light. My gearing doesn't help. When we're in the mountains flying by others up the steep hills at 60-75 MPH, he can't pull away, catch me, or visa-versa. We run neck and neck up those hills and I have 35's andhe's stock! Really puzzled since his motor is far more powerful. ?????

I guess we need to go to the track then.......:D

My 80 pulls harder than any 100 I have driven. Maybe mine is an exception or the 100's I have driven were not running as well as they should have. Or perhaps the blown 80's you are familiar with are not running as well as they could.

it's all about perception anyway. It may be that I hate IFS SOOOO BAD that I just can't get past it...... Or, the methanol and the smaller nose pulley make more of a difference than one would think.

Look forward to seeing you in moab John, then we can see if it is BS or not. Numbers are numbers(yea right). later robbie

Hmmmm....when I need them, I'll never buy replacement CV's from YOU now. :D :D :D

I don't intend to prove anything by going to Moab in the 100? Heck, my 80 would be the Moab machine because of the way I outfitted it. Cut frames, custom bumpers, it's smaller than a typical 80?? Man, it'll take every ounce of control in my body to not bring it instead. I think the main reason I plan the 100 is:
A: The long ride there and back
B: It'll be more of a challenge because I'll need to be more careful of damage.

AND BESIDES....AMANDO MENDOZA has already proved to ALL what a 100 can do. He made it EASY for the rest of us! THANKS AMANDO! :D :D :D

Here's an example of what I won't do in the 100:

CLICK on the VIDEO 25MB or 7MB

The video doesn't do justice. One slip and over I go onto my side into the wash. That's why I took it so slow. Also note my front bumper almost hit the 3-foot ledge. I have 70+ degree approach! ROBBIE: I know there will be places in Moab where I'll dream of my 80 and won't have it.

Here's a pics of that ledge from below. Notice the size of the people on top? That climb is the far right side, some missing off the pic. Just doesn't to justice.
