Was asking around about a good box rebuilder and a few mudders suggested I [ upgrade ] to an 80 series box rather than rebuilding my 60 box? Is this really an upgrade? why so? and is it a straight swap in as mentioned? my rig is an 87 so it has the even pattern mount spacing...

what is needed to do the swap besides the box??

Thanks in advance for sharing

I can't help you, I never did that one before.

I searched for you

Yeah, it's a pretty common subject 'round these parts. I'm at a crossroads where mine actually needs some attention now and I'm debating what to do. Like everything with these trucks, this place can damn near spend your money for you. When I did my transfer rebuild, I debated a new case and H55 combo to the tune of $6k because that's just what you do if you have a 60. In reality, I just ended up resealing it and cramming the 4 speed back in it because it works.

All this to say, while I'm considering an 80 box with 105 series shaft upgrade, in all likelihood I'll just end up rebuilding the PS box that's in mine and keep on truckin'.

I went with the 80 box on my late production 1985 as the shipping to a rebuilder from the east coast was expensive, plus I found a great deal on a remanufactured 80 series box so financially it made more sense to go for the 80 box. Added bonus is I can offload the 60 box to someone. It was a bolt in solution too.

I went with an 80 box because of leaks. I'd had a couple of 60 boxes rebuilt by West Texas Off Road and both eventually redeveloped leaks. The box in our 80 series has >300k miles and does not leak, a major factor in steering me toward an 80 box. I looked on Car-part.com, found an 80 box for $200, call the facility and asked about the condition of the box and ordered it.

I had to cut the inner fender to get mine to fit and be able to remove it.......but I have a coil brackets to contend with as well. ( did not have matching bolt pattern, so more effort for sure.)
