G'day, I've recently picked up a 1993 GXL 80 series Landcruiser (Australia) and have noticed a problem with the steering. It seems that when I go full lock (either side) that the wheel turns further than the wheels. This means that my steering wheel is rarely straight. The wheel either leans left or right. I will take it in and get it looked at by a mechanic but I was just trying to get an idea of what it might be so I don't get slugged for an expensive new steering box when it is tie rod ends or something like that.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say, and I think others will have trouble as well. Can you try again to describe the problem?

What do you mean by "full lock (either side)". In fact the entire description leaves me puzzled.

Sorry, full lock might be an Australian expression. When I turn the steering wheel as far to the left or right that it will go (think U-turn) then the steering wheel moves a little bit further that the wheels. If I start with my steering wheel straight and do a right hand U-turn, when I've finished and straighten up again, the steering wheel will be off centre.

That's not good.

I suppose it could be a TRE or something (check the linkage yourself), but it sure sounds like steering box. Remember that the power steering should only be an assist; nothing in the system should ever override the geared (manual) steering.
