TL;DR : Headunit has power and works, speakers make no sound, continuity is good. works in other vehicle, factory amp is bypassed/unplugged.

Hi guys! Very new to the forum, I've tried digging in and doing some reading but cannot seem to find anything to fix my issue.

Some backstory I recently bought a 95' HDJ81 From Japan, I got it with an aftermarket stereo that would turn on but whenever I tried to turn up the audio I got a "AMP GRD" message displayed and it wouldn't have any sound going to it. I figured it was the AMP in the stereo itself so I went ahead and replaced the head unit.

Turns out the aftermarket stereo in the car was already connected to the Gray factory AMP bypass ports, the factory AMP is already unplugged. But I'm not even getting a sound out of my speakers, to my knowledge everything is connected correctly (Using a Scoche Toyota harness). I checked Continuity for everything I had wired myself it all checks out, checked the continuity from the factory plug to the speakers and that checks out. I also tried connecting 2 different speakers incase the one that came in the car (Carzerra Brand) was shot but none of them even made a wisp of noise.

I know it is not the headunit, as I plugged it into a land cruiser Prado and it worked just fine. (Unsure if that has a Fac. AMP its a TX Lim.)

I'm leaning towards something missing in the 80 since I took a known working radio out of my Prado and hooked it to the 80 series and still got no sound coming out.

Headunit I'm trying to put in is a Kenwood DMX-5710S if that helps anything.

Any help or lead is appreciated. TIA

Check the settings on the head unit. Some have the option to disable the internal amp for use with an external one. Also check the manual from the head unit. I put one in my daughter’s old Volvo a few years ago and I had to install an additional ground from the head unit chassis to the body of the car to get it to work. It wasn’t listed anywhere in the instructions. I hope you get it sorted out. Working on PO’s stereo installation is always an adventure.

Figured out my issue somewhat, didn’t fully fix yet but I just plugged in the big connector and left the rear speaker connector unplugged and everything started playing. Found a short in my rear left speaker so that seems to be the issue.

I think it’s just going into a protection mode when I have the rears plugged in (small connector) hopefully changing the speakers out will fix the issue!
