Hey guys, after dealing with California Smog test garbage i've been paying more attention to the emission system. After not thinking anything of it, finally realized my pressure at the gas tank and fuel smell is from either the lines or my charcoal canister.

I've been reading some threads and found that most of you are getting a cheap charcoal canister from AutoZone for an old GM car. Is this still available?

Im also looking for new lines that lead to the canister, the part numbers for these.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You may be able to save the canister. The FSM has a procedure for clearing the filter. If you see activated charcoal when you clear it, it's hosed; if not, you're good (or as good as that POS ever will be).

Remember, its function is to absorb vapors from the tank, present in the lines. No emission check I know of can test this.

Just sayin'...

There's a thread if you search. Try googling "charcoal canister autozone fzj80" or something.

I found out it could be the head gasket, thanks mr head gasket.

Yeah my lines are starting to crack so Im going to replace those before I do the canister. Just want to get rid of that fuel smell and pressure at the tank mainly.

I've found the first hose but cant seem to find the item # for the hose on the left.

Several dealers have online parts sites with the Toyota parts diagrams on them; Olathe and McGeorge Toyota come to mind. @beno can get them for you, if you don't want to do the work yourself, and he probably has them in stock.

Yeah you'd be able to tell because if it's the head gasket it'll start head gasketing

If you need your charcoal filter to work properly this is what you need to face

Most of the system does not function after 20 years, replacing just the connecting hose won't do much

I recently replaced my charcoal canister with the autozone vc120. I ordered mine online & got it shipped for free. You have to match it to a pontiac grand prix. 91 with 3.8 v6 I believe. Just keep putting them in until it matches a year make & model. I just got the fuel line from napa and cut it to fit with new clamps. Don't use the bottom clamp on the vc120. There's plenty of how to videos on Youtube. I have zero gas smell or pressure at the cap now. Best $60 bucks I've spent on my 80.

Rockauto.com -Seems to be the 91 Pontiac Grand Prix 2.4 l I4 and 3.1 V6. Under 'Vapour Canister' alternative part # listed include vc120
No vapour canister listed for 3.4 v6

I cut mine in half and drilled out the little ball bearing that cause the charcoal canister to malfunction. I welded the canister back up and sealed it will self sealing tape. Might be and option for u.

Charcoal Canister - Great Option!

29 pages of good info on this subject.

I like it!!!!!!

Might have to do that too because the gas that is saved won't make any difference at all for the 80. And this will free up a tone of space behind the battery! Granted venting to the atomasphere isn't good for the o-zone.

Hummmm.....
