Baby steps...working my way up to a knuckle rebuild.

Get parts and dive in. You can do it. Marlin crawler inner seals from George.

Ordered the kit from Georg a while back. Finally making the time to dive in. Let both diffs and the xfer case drain for several hours and got both sides down to this point tonight:

You can't tell from the picture, but I couldn't get the cone washers to drop out so I could detach the lower control arm/bearing housing from the knuckle. There's a lot of grease/gunk down there so I'll hose them down with brake cleaner and try again tomorrow. Other than that the axle shafts and birfs are ready to come out.

Maybe I'll be able to put it all back together before the crawl.

Brass drift or brass hammer and hit hard directly on the end of the stud. I like to loosen all four but leave the nut barely started on the ones I am not working on to keep from having to find cone washers that jump off unexpectedly. Once I get the first one off I remove the next nut and knock hell out of that stud with a hammer and brass drift. Not that hard, you just gotta want them to come off. Good luck and have plenty of rags ready!
 
Nastiest job on an 80 IMHO. X2 on what ^ he said!

It's a must to get to know how it comes apart in case you break a birfield / axlshaft one day. So goodvto get your hands dirty now instead of on the trail in a trila by fire scenario. If you were thinking of getting a a
Superset now is the time to do it. Just saying. Its the same job pretty much all over again...
 
Got the cone washers to drop, but I don't have any brass tools. I used the 'back the nut off flush with the stud and beat on it' method instead. The thread are ok, but I'm going to have to take a file to a couple of the nuts in order to get a socket back on them...lesson learned I suppose.

Anyway, got everything broken down, all races removed, and all parts cleaned (might give everything one more round of brake cleaner). Should be close to re-assembly.

Borrowed some brass tools from wct49, and he ok'd the rotors and pads...so we started buttoning it back up:

My lock nuts looked like someone had beat them with a chisel and a BFH in a couple of different places each, so I ordered a new set. Those are supposed to be here tomorrow evening so we stopped at the hubs (new wheel bearing races are in though, courtesy of cheap bearing race kit from Harbor Freight this evening).
