Try with the AC off. My bet is a belt slipping.

Have you put a set of contacts in that starter yet? Might want to have a set on hand as the "hit it with a hammer" trick is usually a short term solution.

I will get some contacts. it actually hasn't acted up in awhile then the other day made the screaching sound. i think its the belts. I wlll change em and see it that was making the noise.

If you can swing it, get me a set too and I'll pay you at the Crawl. I think I can make it until then.

Its official lexus belts are quieter than regular belts. Noticeable difference.

I don't know about Lexus belts but Toyota belts are quiet.

Anything from the local auto parts store are loud.

I have the habit of changing belts every year and noticed that Toy belts are the way to go silent.

Proven, no doubt about it.

Did those belts have Lexus stamped on them?

chris got em from Lexus stealership. said they were stamped toyota i believe. either way they are alot quieter than what i had on there before. which were from the toyota dealership... maybe its got special Lexus cologne on it or some sheeite.

It is the factory belts which are quieter, which includes the Toyota belts. It is quite amazing. While the belts might looks the same, there is something different about them. I would not go with anything else, unless you want more noise.

I just saw this post, and coincidentally, I had just changed the belts (using Toyota belts) on Val's 80 yesterday afternoon. The ones that came off were Toyota also, but this made a HUGE difference.......I changed them, because the ones that were on there used to make some noise in the morning, and the a/c belt would, from time to time, squeal when the compressor kicked in. I can't believe how much difference the new belts made!

The noise issue is not in regards to the belts squealing, that is an old belt issue and that noise will go away with any new belts.

My Cruiser had non-factory belts on it and when replaced with factory belts, the engine was much quieter. It was amazing how much of a difference there is. I don't know why though.

I guess my whole question is whether Lexus makes belts and Toyota makes belts??? I put Toyota belts on my Lexus and they are quiet. I guess "regular belts" = Gates, NAPA, Car Quest etc. right?

My assumption was that there was no difference between Lexus and Toyota belts since it is the same motor.

It would be interesting to know who makes the belts for Toyota, as well as what exactly is the difference between the factory belts and non-factory belts. It could be that the belts are made by a common manufacturer, but there is something different about them. Perhaps they put in "Toyota magic" :-).

My "Toyota" belts from the dealer had Mitsubishi on them.

OEM belts are "v belts" while the after market ones have teeth.... And are not quiet.

My factory Toyota belts had Mitsubishi on them too. I'd be VERY surprised if T makes Toyota AND Lexus belts, especially for a 450. It wasn't until later on that Lexus glass had "Lexus" engraved in it. Up to about '99 (I think) Lexus still had "Toyota" engraved in the glass.

The main difference between aftermarket and factory belts is that all aftermarket ones I've seen are cogged......you want to hear an annoying sound? Put a cogged belt on an 80! The cogs run over that little flat-surface idler pulley below the alternator, and you'll swear your power steering pump is shot!

ask me how I know that......

Fella who was dual membership with Green Country and LSLC, Lance...he was doing a frame-off 100 percent accurate restore on a 196X FJ-40 and stenciled the 3 red Mitsu diamonds on the leaf springs.

Apparently Toyota has used some Mitsu-sourced parts for a long time.

80 Series maintenance day.

After an awesome, issue free trip from Canton to Hot Springs, 60-70 miles IN the park in 4Low, I pulled the old girl in for some needed love.

Chris' dude pointed out that my brakes were shot. I had some pads and dove into the change this am.

My truck already had 100 series pads on the front but I could not, for the life of me, get the new pads on with the shims. I did a quick mud search and there are lots that just toss them, so that is what I did.

Funny thing is, the 100 series pads were on with the anti-squeal shims....I just could not make it happen. Maybe the PO ground the pads down to make it all fit. They feel good now without the shims so I guess all is well.

I did the rears without issue. Inside rear pad was in the metal on one side so I will need to keep an eye on that side.

After I did all that, I painted my sliders and fender bars. I then realized that all the overspray got on my truck because I am out of practice on this stuff and did not have a fan to keep the paint dust off my truck.

I spent the rest of the day wiping the overspray (and what was left of my wax) off with Goof Off.

Truck looks and stops good but I need to wax it and paint the bumpers now.

Love my 80.

Belts are next......

Pad makers are getting away from the whole shim thing. Did your new pads come with new shims or were you trying to put the old shims in with the new pads? Either way I'm sure you are fine as is.
