If ifs like all the other OLD toyota starters I've seen, Bomar is spot on.

The "rebuild" takes about five minutes max. You just replace the contacts and it works like new. There's maybe four or five screws involved. Simple.

It is just hard to get the top bolt off. Max you are looking at 1 hr...total time.

OEM stater I would guess $250 to buy...to rebuilt with OEM parts maybe $60

2822672010 - starter kit
2822666060 - starter kit
2823554380 - plunger - optional

Got everything finished up last night but didn't take any pics of the last pieces going back together, although I should have gotten one of Chris' face when I told him that we'd have to take the passenger side back apart because I forgot to bend the teeth on the lock washer. Oops!

After a project like this WWJROBD? Well, he'd have a few of these of course:

Truck rode very smooth on the initial test drive...no rubbing/roaring/grinding/or any other abnormal noises. I could never get the rear e-locker to disengage, though. Before pulling it into the garage to do the work I locked the front and rear diffs. As part of this project I changed the fluid in the rear diff, but that's all that was done back there. When I backed it out of the garage last night, the front locker disengaged almost immediately, but nothing I did would disengage the rear. I can hear the switch clicking in the cab, but the light never starts flashing or goes out (and it's definitely still locked). Any thoughts?

I don't get the rebuild thing with starters.

If so hard to remove, why not replace with new?

What is hard about this starter to remove?

Don't know where the starter is in the 80, but in the 100 it's down in the V bank. When mine went out, I replaced with a reman from Mr. T. Wasn't worth it to me to have to take it back apart if something went wrong. Maybe that's faulty logic but it made me sleep better at night!

Mine's starting to click on me a few times a week. It's getting worse fast.

just in case somebody comes across a used ARB for an 80, send me a PM - we feel we need more protection for the mall :hillbilly: - should be reasonably close to Baton Rouge

Thanks in advance  Claudia

No I've never changed one but it's in the stock location is not in the middle of the engine like a 100 series just wondering what makes it so hard to change.

Bro...I changed the starter on Janae's old 80...that's how "hard" it is.

its not hard job to change starter its just a pain in the ass to get to it. If ya got skinny arms its not bad at all. Mine wouldn't turn over so i just hit it with a hammer. works fine now. only noticed it not wanting to turn over after long trips.

on start up the 80 will make a screaching sound sometimes. I am not sure if i have a belt slipping or if the starter is sticking. kind of sounds like when you start the motor when its already running.

Try with the AC off. My bet is a belt slipping.

Have you put a set of contacts in that starter yet? Might want to have a set on hand as the "hit it with a hammer" trick is usually a short term solution.
