Hi All -

My right front CV joint needs to be replaced and when I brought the new ones to my mechanic (2 new ones actually - one from Partssouk in Dubai and one directly from Toyota Dealer in the USA), both of them (part #43405-60070) are about 1/4 inch longer than the one that went bad in my SUV. (see pic 1) The weird thing is my SUV has never had any parts put on it that are not factory parts. Is it possible that at some point the length of the CV Joint was altered for a 94'? Also the end of the shaft that has the splines/grooves is longer on the new ones that were delivered. (See pics 2 and 3). At this point, any new ones I order I think will look just like the 2 that arrived, even if they are the Birfield OEM ones. I am not sure what to do. I guess I have to find a used one. Anyone have any thoughts? Best - Russ
1) Pic 1 - old one (left) and new one (right) - new one is 1/4 inch longer in total length and the spline groove area is different in size as well
2) Pic 2 - old one from my truck (spline/groove area)
3) Pic 3 - new one from factory (spline/groove area)

Yup. There are two different length cv shafts throught the years. Lots of info here. Earlier 80 series had shorter shafts and later had longer shafts and coincide with the drive flange thicknesses. Im not certain of any parts unavailability or not but i believe you could order new drive flanges that match the cv shafts you purchased (vs reordering older/shorter shafts). Do a little research here or pick up the phone and call kurt at cruiser outfitters. Absolute wits-end may also have a spacer solution for you.

Maybe they can chime in with their available solutions @cruiseroutfit and @NLXTACY

Thank you very much for the reply. I will reach to both.

We (Cruiser Outfitters) have all the available solutions :D

The longer drive flanges in multiple flavors (OEM or aftermarket Japanese), flange spacers, as well as the correct length 90-94 birfs in Japanese manufacturer and a plethora of the longer joints in Japanese, aftermarket and heavy duty variants. Give us a shout @ Cruiser Outfitters if we can help!

You need either:

1. The correct length birf joint. We (Cruiser Outfitters stock a Japanese 90-94 birf that is the correct length, part# FAXT60060JP I think, going by memory here, call the shop Monday any they can verify/ship)

2. A wider drive flange (Part# HUBFLG60040 (OEM) or HUBFLG60040AFT (Japanese aftermarket) at Cruiser Outfitters) *PREFERRED OPTION IMO* (see attached picture, the splines portion is taller/deeper/wider) than your early variant flanges)

3. A birf spacer, part# BIRFSPACER and a linger dust cap to use it, part# HUB35010LONG, again @ Cruiser Outfitters

OK - I will contact you tomorrow. I will need to see pictures before I order another wrong part though. It's been painful ordering the parts and getting them to see they are incorrect. Please see the pics above as I need the C joint that has the smaller spline/groove area at the top. That area should only measure about 1 inch. Thank you. Russ

It will probably be a lot cheaper to get the drive flanges that match those new birfs than to get another set of CVs

Russ,

I know that you are frustrated, however saying "but I need to see pictures" tells me you don't know Kurt and don't understand who he is. You've just been connected to one of 5 people on the globe who will absolutely get you precisely what you need. He's fully informed about every model and year and variation of your model LandCruiser and has more skills and knowledge of that in his pinky than the Toyota dealer you got the wrong parts from. I see from your low post count that you're not a regular here, so I thought I'd take a moment to bring you up to speed. Rather than express doubts in his ability right away by asking for photographic proof, I encourage you to properly inform him about your vehicle (year, engine, VIN, etc) and allow him to provide the correct parts in the way he has for thousands for many years. Best, Doug.

Amen !

The simplest and best and cheapest solution here is to purchase the thicker drive flanges.
New flanges will probably cost you less than return freight.

They last longer as the splined section has 50% more contact area so wears less.

If you're replacing original CVs, at this point I'd advise changing the drive flanges too as they will be worn. Putting new CVs and old flanges together is not ideal, particularly when the flanges are a known problem part for wear and tear

Hi Doug - Hope you had a nice Thnxgiving - I have heard of Kurt and don't doubt he is incredible knowledgeable, but just want to be sure this time, since I have spoken to numerous people and they have not been able to locate the correct part, per my pics. Also, the Toyota dealer and Partssouq both used my year, engine and VIN # and sent me the wrong part. I don't think it hurts to ask someone to send some pics so we don't waste anyone's time. I would hate to waste Kurt's time. Best - Russ

Let me shed a little light on this.

43405-60070 IS the correct replacement part number. There is a catch however. This is part of a multiple substitution that also requires a 43421-60040 drive flange to complete the set.

In mid 94 the length of the birfield splined area was lengthened to improve durability. Toyota superseded the old short shaft to the longer one and the corresponding taller flange.
