Hey folks,

Have a ‘97, hearing lots of “clattering” when I accelerate (do some people call that knock and ping?).
Anyway, wanted to hear any suggestions for what the issue might be. Timing-related?
(Estimated cost to fix? *gasp*)
Any suggestions/tips/solutions are welcomed!

Thanks everyone !
Mike

Kinda need to take a recording of the sound that will help narrow it down.

Ok, I just took a recording off of my iPhone, but it’s in “.m4a” format (which “isn’t an allowed extension”, it won’t let me upload), so I’ll need to figure out how to convert that to .mp3, etc., when I get back to the house .. (btw, I had to somewhat keep my foot on the brake and take my foot on and off the gas to get it to make the sound, while driving next to a long fence that the microphone could pick the sound off...😉)
I will try to post within the hour - thanks guys!

No CEL? If no, it's probably not timing related. Check your exhaust to see that it's all tight and no leaks. Could be a busted motor mount causing the exhaust to bump up against the underside. We seem to have had a rash of bad motor mounts lately.

Thanks, Dave, I’ll check that out too.

Yes. I follow your line of thinking, and can see how that might help a bit, but have the feeling it wouldn’t eliminate it completely. Anyway, I’ll try to post the sound file soon as I’m able.

Easy test would be to dump a can of (high quality) octane booster in your tank.

Yeah - I run 93 on mine - but because turbo.

Is the rattling the same sound you heard when you first had the front driveshaft back in with fresh u joints...or is it a different sound? Does it only happen when the truck is in motion, or can you force the sound to happen sitting still? Can you feel it through the steering wheel? How about through the shifter? Does it increase / decrease related to your speed? These are the questions we need answers to in order to diagnose.

Ok, uploading the (now) .wav file... you'll hear it more around the 13 sec mark. Again, the iphone isn't idea for recording when you're driving (even when in a parking lot).

Also, Dave, no this is totally engine related. I got the front U-joints fixed and that was vibration-related, and now solved. Also, you only hear it when accelerating, not when idling -- and more specifically, when you have the pedal down full, you don't hear it, but only when you're kinda "gliding" (kinda pressing the pedal, and kinda not -- kinda "coasting with gas", if that were a thing).

Youtube then link

WOT would reveal the pinging most if that was the case

Exhaust leak would make the noise in nuetral as well usually.

So looks like we keep digging.

Is it a video? Just YouTube it or email to to me and I'll upload it
Ok, I'll send you the sound file (will send you .wav and .mp3 to cover everyone's bases, I guess...)

Nvm, it won't let me send to you... I'll see if I can upload to youtube, even though it's a sound file.
