80 EGR VSV Replacement

Doug,

Get Andy to use his long, surgical fingers to do the VSV. It'll be easier and faster this way than the FSM way. If you remove the Upper intake support brace (long black thing), he can easily reach in there and manipulate the VSV.

Just a thought.

Thanks all for your input on this.
I replaced my VSV in about 2 hours as well without taking off the manifold. (small hands required)
200mi later and the code has not returned.

There is a tube that goes through the intake that gets clogged. Check and clean with a very long thin drill bit.

hi Mike, can you tell me where this connection leads too? I've been searching for this info for quite a while. mine has no hoses connected to it and I've seen pics where it's connected to the EGR.

Are you referring to a pic? Please try again with the correct pic and place an arrow on the connector you're inquiring about. Also, you might be wanting the 80 forum vs the clubhouse setion, but no matter, we can help you out.

Sorry, didn’t realize this was a clubhouse thread. A little on my rig. 96 LX450 just purchased 6 months ago and has since been in shop for repaint and reupholstered. Just got it back and started with the engine repairs. Just replaced some firewall area heater hoses that were leaking, EGR, heater control valve and still getting the P0401 code. Just realized there was a bong that has no vacuum tube attached and started my search. Looks like maybe when the previous owner had the head gasket done the mechanic may have no botched the vaccine lines.
I noticed in some pics and video I’ve seen that shows that bong connects to egr?

Those two are supposed to connect together. Where does that vacuum hose run to now?

P401 has a huge following so do a search and you'll have a year's worth of reading .


One reason I can think of why that nipple is not connected, is because it possibly could be clogged. People have used various methods to clean that short nipple, using a skinny drill bit for example, followed by compressed air.

In any case, read up on those threads and educate yourself on how to solve this problem logically versus throwing money at it. It's really not that difficult once you understand what each component does in the system.

I bypassed mine long time ago using the resistor method, again you can read about this mod as well.

That’s what I’m seeing is like your pic. That vacuum bong is suppose to go to the egr. Mine is connected underneath the manifold. Haven’t had a chance to investigate where it’s leading to yet

IIRC that pipe passes through the intake to the underside, so it is possible that they routed the hose directly under the intake and connected it to the right place.

Found this pic in the 80 section and I circled the end of the hose that connects to the nipple (i think) that goes through the manifold. So, this hose connects to the nipple on the underside of the manifold. The pic below shows the hose that connects to the nipple on top of the manifold.

Hey guys I spent some days researching my 97's PO401 and these forums. This thread was the one that helped the most with the best description of testing and options for repair. I ended up needing a VSV determined with the gauge on the windshield wiper and driving around. All other components passed their tests. It tried the bracket entry method and I'm just too big and my eyes aren't great. So I ended up removing the throttle body only and had plenty of access to replace the VSV. It still took some fingering and cussing but entry from under the frame is really easy with good lighting. CEL light cleared and I passed smog test today. So thanks all!!!!
