Well the wife and I are finding out that bringing four of us means having to bring A LOT of stuff. I got the Sears XCargo20 for the roof. That'll help, but the two REALLY comfortable cots we have won't fit anywhere. Trimming down chair sizes to those tent peg kind, our cooking box got WAY reduced. Our Edgestar fridge is gigantic! It's time to rethink some stuff! Like....should I bring the wife? ;)

Get a cargo rack that you put into a receiver hitch. You can get them pretty cheap at Harbor Freight. I did and it made life a lot better, being able to put the cooler and water jugs back there.

Does anybody want/need extra cross bars for a factory roof rack. I removed my factory rack off my 04 in favor of a roof rack. I can probably strap the cross bars down and bring them to HIH in anybody wants them

Yes please! I would like them if they are off the LC- (LX cross bars won't fit the LC)

Yes it's a LC, I'll strap them up and bring them.

Denver Caravan Option departing early Tuesday morning, July 25.

I would be happy to lead a a small group (8 spots or fewer ideally) who would like to caravan down on Tuesday morning, leaving at 7-7:15 from The Fort restaurant just off of Hwy. 285.

Here's my plan, drive SW to Gunnison and then onto Lake City. Then head south from Lake City and turn right heading west, on the Forest Access Road that will take us over Stoney Pass. We will find a primitive camp spot along this trail, as I did last year that we can end our day, mid to late afternoon. You must pack your own water, food and human waste systems, as there will be none available.

On the Stoney Pass Trail, there's one tough section, that may be really difficult to pull a trailer on, unless you have one that is built for off-road.

Wednesday morning, I would like to be up early and then have a short 1-2 hour drive to finish the trek that drops in on the road that comes from Animas Forks, that leads us right into Silverton and to the camp site, since I am helping Stan and Chris with getting everyone settled into the HIH7 camp site that day.

I drove Stoney Pass last year en route to HIH 6 and had a blast, with some awesome scenery and driving experiences.

If these details fit your driving, timing, and camping styles, than let me know if you would like to join me!
Consider me interested! Stoney Pass is one of my favorites. It would be awesome if I could hook up with you around Gunnison since I hope to spend Monday night in Taylor Park.

We could make that work 87Warrior if you are interested in connecting up as we roll through, late morning. My cell is 303-478-5729. HAM handle is KD0UGR.

I don't think that I am going to have time to get my cb installed before leaving. Do you think a Cobra 75 with a K30 or Little 'Wil will be sufficient for trail communication? I had different plans and eventually want to do HAM but time is just running out so I am hoping that a temporary solution using equipment that I have access to will do the job.

I do have a Gamiviti rack so I was planning to use the magnetic mount on the hood so that the rack does not affect the signal.

OR I could get a universal FireStik mount on the Rack and just install and remove the antenna as necessary and route the cable through one of the doors for a temp solution.

**Sorry that this probably belongs in COMMUNUCATIONS but I assume that others may have similar questions.

Should be fine. It would be best to at least hook everything up and make sure you can communicate at least 500 yards.

This is exactly what I used last year. I had the antenna on the roof sticking between the grid of my gamaviti. It worked well.

As @bluecruiser mentioned in an earlier post, it is now a requirement at HIH to have a functioning CB.

You don't need to spend heaps of money. These small Uniden's will work fine with a Lil Wil mag-mount antenna. It's not something you need to have installed in your 100. Everything is just plug and play. CB is powered from your cig/acc power and the antenna line can be simply run out any door or the rear hatch. The CB base has a speaker that's loud enough and it can just sit between your seat and the center console.

That's it. You can unplug everything when you get home and put in back in the box until your next run or HIH8. CB's last forever.

Uniden PRO 520 or Uniden PRO 510

An added bonus is that if you're driving a long way to get to HIH, trucker chatter on the interstates is pretty entertaining and can be super useful when it comes to traffic, road conditions, hazards, detours, etc. You should brush up on your slang too.... :steer:Trucker Slang and CB Radio Lingo Dictionary - Talk Like a Trucker

Don't even know why I bothered to flush my AHC. Looks brand new.

Quick altitude question. Have people used Buddy Heaters in the past with success? They warn they don't work well over 7k ft.

We'll be camped at over 9,000ft. They are hit and miss at that altitude, but much more miss than hit. Anything over 7,000 feet and they start to struggle. If it lights, it will usually shut off relatively soon afterwards.

Just a word of caution for everyone camping at HIH, using gas inside your tent is very dangerous. I have used the Lil Buddy Type heaters, but just briefly to warm the tent, then shut it off and placed it outside. Using any type of gas stove to warm your tent can have disastrous results. The CO2 builds up quickly without proper ventilation and that leads to death. Happens every year here in Colorado.

We can expect temps to dip into the low 40s at night and there's always a chance we'll see temps in the 30s too. During the day, if the sun is shining, 60 degrees is shorts and t shirt weather here. You're much closer to the sun at 9,000 feet and it can feel very warm regardless of the air temp. Most sleeping bags claim low-limit EN ratings as the comfort rating, but those two numbers can be 15-20° off. I use a quality 30° bag with a fleece blanket packed just in case. You'd be amazed at how much warmer you are by just adding a basic wool or fleece blanket to your bag.

Anybody coming from/going through the Las Vegas area on Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday morning and interested in hooking up. I'm trying to leave Tuesday after work. Not sure if route yet.
