Doing some route planning tonight. Planning on leaving OKC and driving to Taos then up to CO from there. Looking to kill some time around northern NM and southern CO. I know Colorado pretty dang well, but am clueless when it comes to NM.
Anyone have recommendations on what to see/where to go? Also any caravans heading up from NM sometime?

We plan on leaving OKC Sat. Rough plan is to stop at Palo Duro canyon then to (Sun/Mon)Great Sand Dunes, do the trail there with a camp on trail night, then to Gunnison to a place called the Ibar ranch. They have live music in an open air barn and allow camping at the venu. Then owl creek pass to the High Noon Cafe for some Umm umm dang. Arrive Wed at HIH camp. Got rid of the rtt and pulling the Cub camper the first time for any distance or terrain so it should be interesting. At least fuel prices aren't $4 gallon. Looking forward to an epic HIH! Question, what would the best ham frequency be once close to the area just to reach out a try and contact other HIH Hamers?
Good suggestions. If it's on your route, also check out the very small town of Chama and the Cumbres-Toltec Scenic Railroad that originates there. If you go through Chama, you probably are going through Pagosa Springs on your way to/through Durango. I hear there is a neat hot springs resort there. There is a bridge/overlook near Taos for the Rio Grande Gorge. If you come south a little, visit the old catholic mission/church in Chimayo, know locally as the Sanctuario de Chimayo. If you're willing to come even further south there is a TON of stuff to see/do in Santa Fe.
@DirtDawg - I am leaving Albuquerque on Wednesday (7/26) morning and heading up Highway 550 through Bloomfield and Aztec if that corresponds to your planned route.
Bummer! I just moved to Colorado Springs and saw this thread.... Sounds amazing, but it looks like it sold out months ago. My family (of 5) and I have been getting into wheeling with our LX470 this past month and everyone is LOVING it. This sounds like the perfect event to learn more and connect with folks. I joined the waiting list just in case!

I see you're now in Co Springs. If you haven't done them already, take Old Stage up to Gold Camp over to Victor and then do Phantom Canyon to Canon City. Return via "the Bank" and then Shelf Road to Cripple Creek. They aren't terribly rocky, just gravely. But, the views are incredible. Also, if you haven't headed over 24 to Buena Vista, do yourself a favor, go. They have some really nice offroad trails around there that I thoroughly enjoyed a few weeks ago.
I will be driving with my family from south Texas stopping in Durango and picking up a 20 foot R pod 179 as a rental. I'm concerned with my lack of trailer pulling experiences and the size of the trailer especially with the incline going up Kendall mountain. The owner of the RV rentals has a 4.7 tundra and he keeps telling me that my truck is more than capable of pulling the R pod to Kendall Rec Center. He says these models are lighter than some pop-ups. Having no experience in this field can I get your opinion on this?
You will be okay pulling from Durango to Silverton, just take your time. Use lower gears and just stick to the right. It's a pretty solid grade, but the LC will do fine.

I second this. I pull a 3,500 lb (when loaded) popup through NM and CO passes fairly often. It gets the job done but slowly, usually in 2nd gear. The downhill sides of those passes can tax the LC brakes if you don't also have trailer brakes.
I am looking for some help getting a small trailer back to the Denver area after the event. I had someone lined up but that fell through this weekend. Need the trailer to bring some products to guys to help them save on shipping. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Please let me know.

I'm one of the guys Mike is bringing some product to (rear bumper) and I'm feeling guilty about the complication of him needing to get the trailer back to Denver after HIH because he's headed off to another activity right after. I'd be willing to pitch in beer or beer money to help convince you.
Anyone interested in caravanning from Colorado Springs Wednesday morning? If there is anyone coming from Denver (or further up north) we'd love to join some other cruisers on our way to Silverton. We were planning to take Hwy 24 west from Co. Springs, which, if you haven't been, is a beautiful drive though Woodland Park and Buena Vista.
