I just got the fuel cut off working properly and tried to drive up and down the road it wil only get to about 50mph with the pedal to the floor. It is stock smog and stock carb. I checked the timing, fuel level in the sight glass on carb they appear to be to factory specs. It has a new fuel pump and filter. I need to double check to see if the choke is opening all the way and that the throtle is opening all the way. The rig doesnt act like it is running out of fuel. Its almost like there is a govenor keeping it at 50. It also accelerates great in first and second gear but slows its acceleration in 3rd and 4th.

I had this problem as well. I felt like if I pushed any harder the pedal might go thru the floor.

I ended up needing to have the carb rebuilt and a new Fuel filter put on and I made a slight adjustment on my accelerator linkage which was slightly loose too. Solved the problem.

Make sure that where your linkage rod is next to the brake booster on the firewall hasnt lost that little grommet inside of it. mine did and it made the truck feel like it was missing as well...

fuel or carb

Centermass, you might want to list everything you have done to the rig.

New EGR system
All emmssions items connected correctly
Intake/exhaust manifold machined and new gaskets installed.
Carburetor rebuilt
New Fuel pump
New fuel filter
Timing is set
New spark plugs
Electrical connectors cleaned
emission computer resoldered

Is it a factory fuel pump or aftermarket? I lost 10mph on the top end when I put an aftermarket fuel pump in. I removed it and put a new toyota pump in and had my top end again. There could be other issues as well. My '78 can pull 50 in third gear and 85 in fourth. You have a 3.73 rear and mine is 4.11 so highway speeds should not be an issue with good compression in all 6 cylinders and a good carb.

Hi All:

The secondaries not opening in the carb?

Restricted exhaust???

Dan posted before I got to work tonight. The rubber bushing that holds the throttle linkage fell out. I got it pushed back in and now it is scarry fast. I thought getting it running strong should be first but after going 65 mph with the sloppiest steering I have ever driven. I am quickly rethinking that. Thanks guys

Hmmm, thanks a bunch for posting this up. My old jalopy has the same exact problem, but it is possible that living at 8000' and having 35's with stock gearing is the issue? I was in the same boat as you though, 50 mph was fast enough with the sloppy scary steering  Now that that is fixed, I will start by checking the carb and fuel pump to make sure it is a OEM part.
