Hi there
Just wondering if anyone has info on 5speeds that fit the 55.
I was told mine had original 4spd but i have found that its a 5spd and curious what box it is.
It still has the petrol 2F, 4.2ltr.

Any info would be great

Maybe an aftermarket overdrive?

The Cruiser 5 speed variant is the H55F, but the more common of is 60/70 specific and if you had, you'd know, because the shifter'd be beating your knee in second.

If you have an H55 and shifter is in original location, you've a relatively rare unicorn in the U.S.

Not well versed on all the overdrives, but Fairey seems to have been common for this vintage 40/55.

Thanks for that, it is right hand drive so second is away from my knee,
If it was left hand drive then 2nd would be hitting me knee tho.

I have been told about the over drive ones but then was told that wasnt it.

Would the h55f or 60/70 have any sort of identification plate on them?

If RHD, it increases the odds of an H55F, simply because RHD markets had more 5 speed late J4X variations that they were installed in.

Easiest indicator would be to look at the back of the transmission. H55 has a housing extension.

See the chunk between the transmission and transfer case in the first pic?

Granted, I don't know how the bolt on ODs mated or looked, but surely someone can provide a means to ID.

Who has done all that work on the engine and Tranny? Looks awesome!

Thanks mate
Are there any h55 without that rear drum on them.
Mine doesnt have that.

Other than that it looks the same.

Robbie.....

Just another reason I'm jealous of your relocation. :)

Yes, if the axle has ebrake provisions, then the split case did not.

Think, being operative, most of the early Cruisers with split cases that had axle e brake were full float, although some markets may have had semi.

In the U.S., we had neither H55s, nor full floats, but most common conversions include swapping semi float (with no ebrake) for full floats that had, when swapping from 4 to 5 speeds.

The split case e brake is a proverbial pink unicorn configuration, since rare to begin with and difficult to source, but full float is mo' betta and a more elegant way to deal with, stated retrospectively.

advice to OP, is to post up a few more times, then post some pics....lucky hoon

That first picture of the five speed most likely had the hand brake added. The shifter is in the location for either the 60 series or 70 series. All those had a hand brake on the axle whether full floater or semi. US only got semi floater, even those 8/80+ with the hand brake including the 40 series. Wasn't until 80 series we saw a rear full floater in a Land Cruiser. The second picture shows the correct location for shifter on the 40/55 series.
