Very, very nice work.

Quick question(s): What gauge metal are you using? What are you using for a shear/brake?

Keep up the good work, Matt

I second everything Matt says. I am in need of a new brake as the POS that I have has bit the dust. Curious if anyone knows what brands are the best bang for the buck.

Cheers

Wow, thank you "all" for the compliments. That feels good;)

The guy I bought the metal from says it is 18 guage cold rolled steel. It measures .044" thick, which according to some charts I have seen would make it closer to 17 guage. I've read that there is some expected variability in sheetmetal thickness. It is very close to the metal on the truck which measures .046" in several areas where I brushed away the paint.

I don't have a shear, I cut everything with tin snips, a cut-off tool, or the plasma cutter using a straight piece of wood clamped down as a guide.

I just bought my brake recently from Tractor Supply Company for $229. They had it in stock and I experienced a weak moment and just had to own it. Seems to work pretty good. I'd never used one before about a month ago. Says it can handle 12 guage steel up to 36" long.

I compared the price of that brake to the price of some of the repair panels available out there and decided I'd rather have the tool and do it myself. A man cannot have too many tools IMOP. As a matter of fact, I need more vice grips. Must have more vice grips soon:D

Thanks,
Marvin

A little more progress on my bed panel in the last couple of evenings. I was moving pretty quick on those welds so as to not heat things up too much, so I wasn't getting 100% penetration and ended up welding the inside and the outside of the panel.

Started grinding down the welds last night. Moving around alot to keep the heat down. Sort of tedious, but it is turning out pretty good. While grinding the outside welds I left the inside braces in place and while grinding the inside welds I left the outside brace in place. A few more areas to touch up and grind down and that section will be done.

Here are a few before the carnage began. Most of these were taken by the PO just before I bought the truck.

BTW, what does this mean in English?

( Mort aux vaches !!!!!! Marc.....

Thank you,

Looking for some help from you guys that know so much about Landcruisers.

The air cleaner that came on my truck seems to fit fine but it appears to be missing the air intake snout. The air intake on mine is rectangular and it seems that most of them that I have seen are round. Is this air cleaner from some other year or model?

Thanks,
Marvin

Thanks stevek,

Anyone else have a picture of their air cleaner on a '78 2F? For some reason, I feel like mine is missing something.

I don't have a pic in front of me, but I think you are missing a piece of tin that attaches to that rectangle and then goes round. I believe it's about 6" long.

Then theres the soft extendable piece that attaches to that.

So, in the diagram it doesn't look like there is a specific part available that takes it from rectangle to round. Therefore, I guess I'm in the market for an air cleaner assembly. At this moment I don't feel rushed to find one, but it has been one of those things on my mind.

I finally got around to finishing up the repairs I needed to make on the rear of my frame this last weekend. Someone had cut off the rear corners of the frame and torched several holes into the outside frame rails. I am guessing this was for a rear bumper that was on the truck at one point.

I used sections that I cut out of an old FJ40 rear frame piece that I picked up quite a while back. I welded up and ground down the extra holes and I think it all turned out looking pretty good considering what it looked like when I started.

I loaded the frame up on a trailer this morning and hauled it to be powder coated gloss black. I can't wait to get it back. Hopefully it will be ready by the end of this week. They are going to have to hit a little with the sandblaster first to clean up a little flash rust.
