Im making some progress on the 1970 FJ40 build but ran into a snag today. I recently installed a 77 front axle on my 70 and all went well until I went to install the drive shaft. Appartly I didnt do enough research to see that the mounting flanges are different. My question is can I swap the end of the drive shaft off a later model at the U-joint, or do I have to remove the pinion nut and swap that part from my old drum brake axle to the 77 axle? If I have to mess with the pinion nut is that going to throw off the shimming in the giff or will the crush sleeve/shimming be ok? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So I CAN swap the end of a later model drive shaft onto the 70 drive shaft at the U-joint?

i dont know if the same u joint fits both years. see if the part number is the same for both years if it is it will fit. otherwise the driveline shop can fix it

I looked up the Ujoint part numbers and they are different so that ideas out. Anyone know if the slip joint is the same on the 70 and the 77 drive shafts? Maybe I can swap it there. I dont have a 77 driveshaft, thats why I have all the questions.

Replace the pinion flange and seal with one that fits your driveline. Your pinion seal probably needs replacing anyway.

X2 on the pinion flange. Any reputable LC vendor has theese on the shelf.

put a 77 yoke on the 70 dshaft turn it around and bolt it in .have seen this done many times good luck
