What is the original gauge wire on battery cables for my 1977 fj40.Looking to replace them while I'm putting a rebuilt gr starter in.I'm reading that you should upgrade to 2/0 cables but do really need to?I'm guessing the originals are 4 gauge.
Does this starter upgrade draw more amperage?

FWIW - Contact this guy (Beno), and ask for one of these #90982-01128, which was replaced and will actually be this part #90982-01292. OEM parts typically work best. :hillbilly:

I used the same OEM cables from the batt to the starter when I installed a GR starter on my 77. -no problems at all.

FYI - Here is what I used and made my own. That is 1/0 welding cable.

I like that setup GA... I'm going to be installing a winch soon may have to go that route. Can you provide a shopping list? ;)

Forgive the "HiJack", Low....Gin, here ya go:

The military terminals came from at Amazon. The 1/0 CCI Royal Excelene welding cable came from wireandsupply.com, they had the best price per foot ($1.85/ft) I could find. The battery lugs at $1.05/unit, and the shrink tubing at $0.75/ft, came from wireandsupply.com as well.

Purchased the lug crimper from Home Depot, and used my shop vice to crimp the lugs. "Test Fitting" is the key to a cleaner application of the new cables.

Fwiw, I like to solder the ring terminals to the end of the battery cables and then heat shrink over that. I think it keeps corrosion at bay a little better.

X2

So do these cables include this additional wire?

I'm not sure about that, being that some PO installed a FLAPS special on mine. I purchased all the necessary items and made my own. As for the fuse-able link wire, mine had a ring terminal and was connected to the battery positive lug.

I just bought a fusible link from Coolerman, he kindly included that wire with it.

The small black one, connected to the white wire? Yes. If you send Coolerman some pics of your setup, he can make them depending on the connectors. He turned mine around very quickly, good quality.

Used the 50 year old ground cable when I did a GR on my 64 fj45 worked fine

There has been much debate about soldering the ends.. after alot of research I chose useing a good set crimpers, marine heat shrink as well a marine terminal ends
