What's the difference?

depending on the year, John is right.
HZJ73/74 are both NA. in this case the 74 has coil up front... i beleive.

SteveLCetc, I think you need to be more specific which 73 series and which 74 series your wanting to compare?

Just as an example i've got a FJ73, leaves all around, big diffs and a 4L carby six, and a mate has a BJ74, leaves all round 13bt with a high pinion(not sure if its factory) front diff and big rear diff.

These are both different to the other models mentioned in this thread

Its like the difference between a 40, 41 or 42; 60, 61 or 62; 70 or 71; 80 or 81. It probably means a different engine.

BJ73 was a normally aspirated 3B diesel powered MWB
BJ74 was the same sized diesel engine with a turbo
FJ73 was a carbed 3F gasser(maybe 2F in the beginning?)
FZJ73 was a fuel injected gasser
HJ73 would have been a 2H diesel powered rig but I'm not sure it was ever made
HZJ73 was a normally aspirated diesel
HZJ74 was a later version of same. Coils on front axle.
LJ73 was a smaller turbo diesel and lighter axles on coils, different bodywork
KZJ73 same story, slightly larger motor
RJ73 same again but with a 22RE gasser

Thanks Hulsty,

I'm not really sure *which* 73's and 74's I want to compare - except probably BJ's. Did they make HJ7x's?

RJ73 would be okay too, but probably a diesel. I'm mostly just wondering why 7"3" vs 7"4" right now.

Only HJ75 in either a pick up or troop carrier and they seem to be mainly australian.

Basically in the heavy duty cruisers there is 4 generations of 7* series, 84-90, 90-98(depending on the market),98-07 and 07-now

Anything with RJ,LJ,KZJ is considered a light duty model

There is also a PZJ 7* which is a 5cyl version of the 1HZ and made in the early 90s
It has a heavy duty body with a light duty gearbox.

Is there a web site or something identifying the differences between years, and is the difference between 73 and 74 only in the engine?

Oh yeah - and what defines a "heavy duty body"?

Thanks again...

In the years 84-90 turbo models had an extra "1" added to their series number eg a BJ70 with a turbo became a BJ71 and the same for BJ73 which became a BJ74 and HJ60 with a turbo became a HJ61.

After 1990, when the new range of 1HZ and 1HD T diesels were introduced, they changed the aphabetical part of a series to identify turbos and non turbos. For eg a non turbo 73 series was a HZJ73 and a turbo model was a HDJ73.

In 98 (approx) when the coil sprung front suspension was introduced, they began to add "1" to the series number to identfy a coil sprung front end .For eg a HZJ74 was a coil sprung vehicle with non turbo engine and a HDJ74 was a turboed coil sprung.

The 75 series, which never had a turbo model (inc the cab chassis and troop carrier), became the 78 series(troopy) and the 79 series (cab chassis)which had turbos for the 1st time.

This site also has a lot of info regarding the series differnces.
Foreign Toyota 4x4s

There also some difference between door shapes and windscreen frames between models but basically there are 2 types of bodies in the heavy duty(not including the various wheel bases)

Once you understand how it works (and it does have its quirks and exceptions) you will understand the whole Toyota model range from cars to buses to tractors

actually it isn't a shame because the HDJ73 would have the s***ty H151 tranny in it instead of the H55F that the HZJ73 has...

The JDM models we import HZJ 73 has the 1HZ na 6 cylinder4.2l indirect injected smaller front diff with high pinion and front and rear disk brakes from 1990- ?
The BJ74 has the awesome 13B-T 3.4l direct injected turbocharged low pinion larger front diff and drum rear brakes from 1985 - 1989
