Is it just me, or is the factory skidplate on a 73 about as thin as paper? The one on my 40 series seems much stiffer.

Anyone make a better one?

Yep, it IS thin.
Don't know a sturdier one being available.
I reinforced mine by welding strips (5 x 30 mm) to it from 'left to right'. The 5 mm side touching the metal of the plate.
It helps, but it doesn't work miracles.

yup its paper thin...
I plan on ripping mine off and making a sturdier one when the time comes.

Mine is made from 1/4 inch plate-much better.

The best are the tube style with plate over the delicate parts. I think Poser posted up some nice ones.

Anything you do will be custom, so the sky is the limit.

Stay tuned. Jason of Cruisin Off Road will be producing beefier 7* series skid plates soon. He has a number of orders lined up already; Mine being in there.

Is this the one you mean
This is of my old 75 series it took a absolut beating and lived
all the rusty bits are where the paints been ripped of from running over stuff
its a shame the 79 series dont have bash plates

the 73 "skid plate" is a joke, i make replacments out of 1 tube and they stand up very well. no place for mud to get caught up either.
anyone have pics of the plate that Greg is talking about?

So do the 73 run a different plate to the 75 series ?

ooh, I'll have to talk to him - he's working on a set of sliders for me right now.

Hmmm... :hhmm:

While you're at it, get him to fab up a bumper. Have no fear, I'll bring the trailer.

(I'm gonna get something big, heavy and expensive shipped to you if that's OK).

It will be similar to the design I've come up with for the 80 series, Cruisin Off Road but there are some more complex shapes to work around on the 7* truck. The basic theme of the design will be the same though: Bolt on to existing threaded holes in the frame. Full width coverage. 1/4" plate, and 1 or more stiffeners welded on for rigidity.

I should have a prototype together sometime next week. I'll post up some pics when I have it done.

Lowenbrau, I'd have to know where the toybox sits to make that work. Might be a one-off.

very strong looking (but also looks a lot like the old mud collectors on the 40s)..
congrats.

Made some good progress on the 7* Series t-case skid plate. This one was put together with several peices cut and welded together to get the funky shape I wanted to follow the line of the tranny cross member. Getting a couple more formed up tomorrow to go on some local trucks for some "product testing" next week. I'll try to get some good pics while on the trail.

Holes are 2" so they should facilitate good mud drainage, and one of them lines up with the t-case drain plug so you don't have to remove it for servicing.

I don't usually name my products, but I'm calling this the "Stealth Plate" since is has those funky angles, and maintains a low profile.:grinpimp:

Don't forget the pics.

Bonus points if you drop your truck on a boulder and post of vid of it teetering on the plate. :flipoff2:

Got the http://www.cruisinoffroad.com/ plates on three trucks before the Whipsaw run, but I think they just sat there looking purdy. Just a little beefier then the stock ones!

Update:

I checked today, and the skid plate bolts up to 5spd BJ70, HZJ73, BJ73 and BJ74 models. I don't have any better pictures than the ones Greg posted above (which show the unit quite nicely), need to get the website updated.

Just thought I should let you all know what model coverage I have with these. I have one complete one ready for delivery, and if there's interest in more I can have some ready in a few weeks. Contact me via Cruisin Off Road - Contact Information if you're interested.

Thanks
-Jason
