I've tried searching on here and haven't had any luck.

I've purchased brake cylinder repair kits twice now and neither one has been the correct kit. SOR has some nice resources, but their proprietary part numbering system gets old. Does anyone have brake part numbers for an early fj55? Both front and rear kits with drums all around. 3/73 build date.

I was under the impression that any toyota setup would work. It comes to mind that a mid-80's (87?) caliper had more pistons and worked better.

Anybody remember this conversation?

He has drums NOT disc's. The old drums use TWO calipers per wheel.
 
I called 2 Toyota dealerships this morning and I would have rather conversed with stumps. They claimed that the "cup kits" were $55 and $73 a piece front and rear. One of them also informed me that my VIN number was incorrect. I should have a 17 digit VIN.

Perhaps someone can also inform me of the similarities/differences between 55 and 40 series brakes. I ultimately plan to go to a disc setup, but I'd like to be able to get things rolling as is.

The '55's and the '40's are identical as far as the drive train is concerned and that includes brakes. The only differences are the drive shaft lengths.

Don't worry about the dealerships, we here all know that MANY of the dealers haven't got the foggiest idea of what a Land Cruiser is (well almost anyways). Contact Cdan here on the 'mud forum. He's a 'Cruiser fanatic and a parts manager at a Toyota dealer in Albequerque, NM, if anyone can help you he can!

About rebuilding brake components, in my opinion that is a waste of time and money. Buy professionally rebuilt parts or new parts. I have never had a rebuilt brake component that has been rebuilt by a "backyard" mechanic like me last for more than 6 months or so.
 
I've personally never had a problem with rebuilding my brakes. The vast majority of the time, I would be buying a new caliper/cylinder outright, but it just doesn't make sense to me in this application. I would be swapping to a disc setup if I wanted to spend that much money. So, rebuilding it is. With the proper kit (which I have yet to find) and a good hone, you shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks for the heads up on Cdan. I'll be giving him a call soon. In the meantime, I sure would like some confirmation on some beck arnley and/or raybestos part numbers.
 
I'm not too sure of that. I think the rear wheel cylinders are bigger on a '55. NAPA had a kit listed for '55 rears...larger inner diameter. The inner diameter of the cylinder is cast into the outside of the cylinder. It's 2 inch or 2 1/2 inch or something like that. Front cylinders might be bigger too, I forget. But I'm pretty sure the rears are bigger...

Edit: I've used Beck/Arnley rebuild kits before. Good quality. They sometimes are the only place to find clutch cylinder rebuild kits...

Would greatly appreciate if anyone knows of another source if cheaper. Might rebuild since way cheaper but I'm not sure what a hone is? I know it is needed.

Dave I probably have some cylinders. I ended up buying mine from CCOT. While everyone thinks they are cheap crap they have worked just fine for me. I had no bleeding issues with the wheel cylinders.

As far as I can remember the rears were the same but the fronts were different. But it's been a couple years. I can check the EPC tomorrow.

2x that the 40 & 55's are the same. I checked the rear cylinders I pulled from the '70 fj40 vs the '79 pig. Both were 15/16" id and the same height. ty
 
Ok so...can I just order up fj40 brake parts or what? This thread confuzuled me.
I have a 73 that is going to be getting some love as soon as I get my 40 together again.
It needs brakes, steering, and some leaks fixed.
 
There may be some minor differences between the two due to year changes and all. I don't remember when the line nuts went from 9mm to 10mm. I noticed the brake line attachment/bleed holes on the '40 cylinders had one that was raised whereas the '55 cylinder had a flat surface. I'm not sure if that means anything. i'd also be concerned about fit up differences between the two. I'd check with the SOR catalog and also look to see if there were any other major differences. As far as stopping power, the brake cylinder similarity suggests that they're the same. i didn't look at the brake shoes either.

If you're going to invest in rebuilds or buying new cylinders, I think most people would recommend a disk conversion for the pigs as it is pretty easy (with respect to working on brake lines) and about the same cost as getting 4 new cylinders for the back. I've been really pleased with my setup- monte carlo calipers.

for a 73, 40 and 55 cylinders are not the same. 55's rears are "directional" (upside down or something). I just bought a whole new set from Toyota (Ralph Hayes...will ship and gives 25% discount). My parts guy said that they are for sure not the same and that there is a limited number available. Mine are fine for now, but I bought replacements and have added them to the stockpile. I think that my cost was right around $450-$500.
 
BOY, have I been there, done that...

Just TRY to find rear cylinders for a Dec '70-build 55. Apparently, there was a different design for something like '69 thru 12-71, ANYTHING before or after is available, my year is all NOT IN STOCK or not listed.

SO, in the same boat as Celebdae, I searched the internet (ebay, mostly) for rear cylinders for 40's or 55's, and relied on the CYLINDER BODY (where was the adjuster, bleeder, and was it single or double-piston) to find ones that would work. My technique worked perfectly; ignoring year and model, regardless of what the part was listed for (year, left rear upper, right rear lower, etc), I looked at the configuration to determine if it would fit. Bought 4 NOS cylinders that way, and they bolted right up.

Having said that, I WISHED I'd sucked it up when the rig was down and just slapped on rear calipers.

I, too have rebuilt many a wheel cylinder, and my current '71 Pig has proved to be very problematic. My honed rebuilds just do not last.
 
Call Mark's Offroad or Cruiser Outfitters. They have the parts and the knowledge to get you what you need for really good prices. Problem solved, and you're supporting a vendor.
