Yeah, you'll need a 700R4 tranny, a control switch kit for lock-up, an auto tranny adapter to t.c., a new front output flange/joint if it's a Downey adapter, an auto tranny shifter, and an auto tranny cooler.

Howdy! You will also need to change the length of both driveshafts. The 700r4 is much longer than the original 3 speed transmission. Enjoy!! John

i've got a 327and M22 from 66 Vette with an overdrive that the PO installed in 72. if i were to go 700r4 and either stay 327 or go 383 will i need to to make mods to my shafts?
thanks in advance!

Almost always, and it's very hard for Downey or AA to pre-determine if you will need to modify shafts or not because of different tranny lengths, different adapter lenghts/choices, and different kinds of motor mounting and/or radiator clearance issues. All you can do is put the drivetrain into the best position possible, then modify shafts as necessary.

i just did that conversion, you also need a shifter. I went with Locar. it will help if you reverse the rear springs. if you do this you won't be able to run a long range tank.

Probably.......the 700r4 is ~23". With my 350 pushed as far foward as possible, 700r4, 3" adapter, and dana 300 TC I still had to cut the crossmember out. Do you still have a crossmember?

i have my crossmember..

Ive got a 72 FJ40 with a Chevy 327 and the factory 3 spd and trns case. If I put a 700R4 in it, will I need a new rear axle?

Thanks for any and all advice,

if you get the adapter to run the solid t-case probably not. but you still might end up needing to flip the rear springs

I don't know the difference(if any) in lengths between a solid t-case with e-brake and adapter and a split t-case without e-brake and adapter, but this build has the motor pushed as far forward as possible (some radiator mouting modification) and was still left with a measley 17" rear driveshaft. I'm running the split t-case and a 70 series rear end with e-brake

If you move your motor foward and flip the rears you can get a 24"+ d-shaft. Mine will be close to 25". The funny thing about people's thoughts on a auto tranny being too long.........nobody ever takes into account the bellhousing for the manual. A NV4500 with the bellhousing is darn near as long as the 700r4.
