The tube is 5mm steel and the face plate is 8mm steel. Gussetted on the bottom with 5mm plate.

In Europe they sell aftermarket and oem hitches that are bolted up to the sides of the frame and then there is a thick wall tube connecting the 2 sides holding the hitch.

I would not tow anything heavy with your setup because that is attached to one of the weakest points on the frame !

I had the exact same receiver tube on my PZJ77, but it isn't a full 2” square and my hitch didn't fit.

So I actually just got done installing a new hitch.
Fun fact: Toyota used a standard bolt pattern in the back so you can actually just go to your local auto parts store and pick up a pintel hook, or hook-ball combo and bolt it right on. I went ahead and made a mounting plate to be able to install it a little bit lower. (It can actually be mounted at 3 heights). It also added mounting points for the safety chains.

Thats the design I have been hoping to come across. Any idea if there is one made in the US that fits 70 series like that, Joe?

Probably not ,most of the European Cruisers I bring have them ,let me check if I have one here.I usually remove them because they are heavy and the cruisers look cleaner in the rear without them.

They will need to be modified because they have no slide in receiver hitch as the US spec and I think the Euro ball is slightly different from your standard US ball.

Gotcha, if modification is needed anyways I will just make a custom one. I forgot about the different receiver standards here vs there. Ill fab up something that bolts to frame and has 2" receiver.

Sorry for thread hijack! @divemedic

I would have to disagree with @joekatana if you look at the cross section and bracing (or lack there of) on an aftermarket tow bar vs. the frame in this area the frame is pretty beefy. (Fully boxed frame size with large angled braces, and a reinforcement plate in the center) I wouldn't tow 7000lbs with it, but I would be more worried about other parts at that load.

I just spent yesterday towing ~2000lbs about ~500miles with my PZJ77, and was relatively happy with the performance. I wasn't passing anyone and sometimes had to downshift on Midwest freeways (not so steep) but I was still making it up to freeway speed.

I grew up in a part of the world where if you want to buy a tow rig it would be a Patrol or Land Cruiser 6 cilinder diesel.

All of these have the hitches bolted to the sides of the frame and some also are bolted in the middle.

Your setup is as weak as all the half ton trucks here with the hitch attached to the bumper while the 3/4 and 1 ton rigs have the hitch mounted to the bottom and sides of the frame.

I have replaced many of those mid rear sections already because people thought it was a great recovery point without adding any reinforcements !

Here is a picture of a aftermarket 7x series hitch, I would be confident that the Cruiser will fail before the hitch does !

@joekatana I think that we maybe talking about different towing levels. I don't think of the 70series Landcruiser as towing like a 3/4ton truck. Maybe it is more that I am underestimating the Landcruiser than overestimating the frame strength.

I definitely agree that if you want to pull like a 3/4 ton you need a much more robust system similar to the ones that you are pulling off.

home fabbed (not by me). Strong enough I don't worry about it.

I have to agree with Joe. I wouldn't tow more than maybe 1500-2000lb with the receiver on the rear bumper of a 70 series. I have one built to connect to the rear bumper and the sides of the frame rail. It has stood up well towing up to 4000lb (16' camper trailer loaded). I think I'd build something even heavier if I was towing more.

Here is my hitch:

I think that someone in Japan must have been selling them because it matches the one that I just took off pretty well.

Yup. Guy builds bumpers too to sell on the auction pages. I had to file bolt holes out about 2mm on one side to fit. Otherwise it's good stuff.

When I cleaned up the rear frame on my 85 ute I found this crack in the center of the rear cross member. I only towed twice with it under 1000lbs and 45mph in town. Don’t know how much the PO towed with this truck or not. Don’t know how much towing this did back in Australia. So the rear crossmember isn’t that strong? No idea as to what really caused this crack though.

Ive seen nearly 3000kg of wet concrete carried in the back of a HZJ75 in soft sand.

Those Toyota towing set ups were never considered much good in Australia. While the hitch is beefy looking, what it bolts to is crap. Which is why they offer the the towing set up like Locked79 has.
I had one of these on my 75 series ute

Honestly I don’t look at these trucks as towing machines by any means. For longevity purposes I’d avoid it personally.
I know not everyone is in the same situation but the newer vehicles are far better set up for power, handling and braking.

My 77 would pull my jet sled without a problem, though you could tell it was definitely under a heavy load. I’ve always read not to tow in 5th with these trucks also so driving at 80km/h or reving the crap out of it in 4th to keep 100km just seemed very inefficent.

Well..... i worked for a bloke that used to own a hj75 2h. That thing never complained with 4t behind it all its life. Nearly 400, 000kms when he sold it still on the road.

Heres my hzj75. I'm saying that it is well over 4t there. Also the front wheels of the trailer sit up due to my lift. Barely sagged if at all.
