Hello,

This is my first post. I am looking to import a 70 series troop carrier into the USA. I am 100% on board with the idea, however my girlfriend is hesitant with being in a vehicle without airbags. Since the platform has not changed much from the beginning. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to retro fit a 2007+ interior into a 25 year old 70 series in order to get the front air bags. I understand that this would be an expensive task. I am just curious if it is something that is possible. Thank you,

Cheaper and easier to leaver her at home. I think if you want to spend money to make it safer, upgrade the brakes, get the best tyres. Always drive within its limits they are not made to be safe at freeway speeds. Most people die in the rollover, the roof is the weak point.

Fit a flashing red light that says "airbag circuits functioning normally".

Over here we can find brand new modern GRJ71 body (like everything body and interior) for sale (probably from companies using the chassis+engine as base for a military thing) and people are using them to "restore" older LJ70 or HZJ71 in swapping the bodies.

But do they come with airbags? A lot of middle eastern vehicles are sold in places where there are no modern safety regs

Seems like they have driver airbag but not the optional passenger airbag (but a 2nd big glove box !).

And here is a Land Cruiser specialised garage that just used one of those to restore a HZJ71 :

Huge job with a ton of mods to make it all work....full harness, sensors, bags, different firewall mounts between the new and old dash.

Get an 80 and make it similar to a Troopy.

You'll need to figure out a ton of electric stuff as well, you will need the computers and crap that run it all. You will be up for thousands after thousands, do yourself a favour and don't even bother.

You just need to look at one of the many plugs (Toyota was kind enough to color them yellow) that is required to make airbags work properly and you’ll realize that adding airbags after the fact isn’t really practical.

Surprised no one has suggested a proper roll bar and harnesses. Better than air bags and much easier to fit. All 70 series should have a roll bar anyway IMHO given how weak the roof is.

Its going to depend on the driving conditions and terrain, but just walking through auction yards with dead LWB 7* landcruisers, its clear rollover protection would be the easiest and most beneficial. (at least around here)

A good steel bullbar helps stop animals coming over the bonnet.
Replacing the yellowish head lights with something more modern could also improve safety.

Lots of other things missed too. Stability control and roll over protection. Might have to wait for a 2021 it had recently gotten stability controls and airbags. Apparently the utes got side airbags because the mining industry wanted it.

Government ohs standards in Australia actually. The mining companies would have people sitting in dune buggies if they could get away with it
