Hey guys, my first post, long time lurker. I currently drive an 06 tacoma as my daily driver. I'm looking for a weekend warrior wheeler. I like some of the 70 series rigs i've seen on here but, did they ever sell 70 series in the states? What ever I buy has to be street legal in California. We have some serious emissions standards here. If I can't buy a 70 series LC, I might go with an 80 series, I like the factory locker option, but if I have a choice, I'd love to build up a 70. I've seen some amazing 70's in Toyota 4wd owners magazine. Any help you can give would be great. Thanks, and this is one amazing web site!

Welcome to the board.

I suggest reading the FAQ for importing in the diesel section. It will let you know what you want.

Also now try the search function. It works now that your registered on here.

Cheers.

Wow, I read the importing thread and I'm still confused. I use the search and see what I can find. Thanks.

Ya, most of us are with you on this. 70's were never imported to NA. Well, maybe to Canada as mine trucks. Some are around, but very rare. If money is no object, you can find one and be legal. For the rest of us, it's just a dream.

The 80 is an awesome vehicle. Read the threads on the 80's forum about how easy it is to build them into an awesome trail vehicle. Even in stock form they're incredible. Coil springs rock. Though, the 60 body is better looking IMHOP.

O.K., so I'm a NOOB! I used the search, found a ton of info. Looks like it's expensive and a pain in the @ss to own a 70 in the states. I love the classic look of these rigs. Why the hell didn't they sell these here?? Looks like I'll build up an 80 instead. Thanks for the help guys. I'll try to use the search instead of asking a question that's been hashed out in a hundred other threads. Duh! :whoops:

It's more simple than you expect.

You can import a canadian delivered BJ70 into the united states for about $600 in fees using a registered importer. CDN trucks won't have turbos, nor a/c, nor automatic transmissions, nor full float rear ends, and the good ones will bring premium dollar while many others are DOA.

There are also 4-8 BJ70's in the US already for direct purchase, getting them registered in california is maybe a bit harder, but has been done tens of times in the last decade. California will allow BJ70's, they just have to be massaged into the system if not already there- nothing illegal, just educating the motor vehicle department employees.

find your truck, then get back to us.

next.

make sure it's all one color, and has clear photos of rocker panels and rear quarter panels.

You could buy the best BJ70 in Canada for that price.

Not BJ70 in the US without good upgrades would be worth more than $15,000. If it has more than 300,000 miles it needs more work.

canucks, post up the standard search sites
(please)

Hit up Seth at PV Cruisers, he has a pretty nice 85 with a turbo for sale. He is even in Cali:D
