yeah, was talking with someone else who thought it was an old bellview at first glance but the i.d. tag says 'warn 6000.' can't see bellview anywhere but the tag is pretty faded out.

Those old 6000's are stout. The brake is a bit "iffy" but they are up to the job of pulling you out. Lots of guys around here look for them as a great winch for a mud truck. Not crazy about them on hills due to the brake issues though.

you said old, but how old?

is it this style?

IIRC, these were sold as 6000lb for a while, but are actually an 8k winch

they have a manual brake that can be a PITA, but they are big enough for a 40

yeah the winch looks like the one in gladly's picture. why market it as a 6000 when it was really an 8000? doesn't make much sense.

Shawn,

That's the winch that I was talking about in post #2. My buddy said that it had more pulling strength than the new Warn 8274. I think that somewhere they changed (or just standardised) the way they rate winches for off-road use. IIRC, hoist and crane winches are rated at what they will pull with the top layer of cable on the spool. While the winches we use are rated at what they will pull with the bottom (or first) layer of cable on the spool.

I remember finding a chart that showed the pull rating for each layer on a 9000 Lb winch, but I can't find it.

That winch will work just fine for you.

Well...not to hijack but I took one off of mine and thought I'd use it on my car hauler trailer and get a little more modern one for the 40. What are they worth?

music to my ears. next to do is change the oil and mount it up. not sure why there is an "oil - fill to bottom plug" casting and an "oil level" casting way below it. anyone know if there are two separate oil chambers?

here's a pic.

Just one oil chamber. Not a big deal, the oil simply lubricates the gears. Here is how I mounted mine. I had a winch mounting plate from an 8274 that I drilled an extra set of holes in, then I welded it to my homemade bumper.

Good luck!

Just to add to this...

When useing a "snatch block", you will also need a "tree saver". That is basically a large strap with looped ends to wrap around a tree and hook the snatch block to.

Edited after seeing the image I saved as an example...

This is actually not a very good example of a tree saver, because the strap is relatively small in diameter. Would be a lot better if it was 3" wide or more. The one I have is about 6inches and made of thick canvas with a padding in it, also has a large metal ring at each end to hook up the snatch.

If I only had the tree saver shown in this pic, I would use a blanket of something to go between the tree and the strap so it did not cut into the tree, (hence the name "tree saver").

Be sure that whatever snatch block you get is rated to double the strength as your winch...at a minimum.

Cause' when you use it, the force at the snatch point will also doube...along with the pull power.

Go bigger than you need to avoid any accidents. Winching can be VERY hazerdous if you do not know what you are doing and pay close attention. I advise you to read up on it and see the numerous accounts of others that have not been careful enough! Be attentive of others on the trail or with you that may not know enough about "winching" to stand clear and well away of the cables etc. If You own and use the winch, it is your responsability to be sure that no accidents happen.

I know I am stressing this, but many people have been hurt and some killed. Become edjucated, it my save you or others from harm.

With that said, a winch is an awesome tool with many uses!
