60 vs 80

I would like to get some opinions on the 80 series. I know very little about them. I have a 83 fj60 that I find very impressive but something newer would be nice. Any info would be appreciated.

So is the FJ80 . When you buy a cruiser the last thing you think of is blazing speed .


80 has more luxuries(sp?) than the 60. And it can come with lockers.

80's are cheaper to lift, easier to drive, and usually out-preform most 60s with the same amount of money put in them. They also have more electronics to worry about, and more cushy stuff that you may or may not like. They make great DD and off-roaders.

60's usually have a lower price tag, less parts/more commonly found parts to fix, and take any whooping you can throw at it. Not as cushy, and not as comfortable as a DD, but are no slouch off-road if built right and reconditioned to ensure long life.

Depends on what you're gonna be doing and the ammendments you want. Decide what you want from a cruiser and then decide from there.

You've asked an extremely open ended question.

What are you plans? Off-road, city/highway only, a mix of both? How you use the 60 vs. 80 will make a difference. Do you care about the styling differences?

What do you find impressive about the 60? How much newer? Would you be interested in a FJ80 (91-92) or a FZJ80 (93-97)?

i have both and love them for different reasons. spill a 5gal bucket of 10W-40 in the 60, no sweat. stock the locked factory 80 wins hands down.

I'm a former 60 owner. 80s are better wheelers with less work and less expensive to lift. Tires are more for 80s. 80s drive better down the highway. The only think I miss about my 60 is the little more room and the character. 80s are missing character, they blend in to the world of rounded SUVs.

If you are looking for a second or third vehicle, and have lots of $$$ to play with go for the 60.

if you need a daily driver and have limited $$$ go for a 95-97 80. I just picked up a super clean 96 with 131K for $9000. It has enough recent repairs from the previous owner to ensure me lots of relativley trouble free miles.

I think a better comparison for beer vs. wine would be comparing a jeep vs. any Land Cruiser. This is my first land cruiser. Before this I owned chevy's and a jeep which were ok off road, parts were cheap, but they were not the best quality. To answer your questions comparing my 60 to the other fourwheel drives I have owned, the 60 is built like a tank and so far has been extremely reliable. Land Cruiser appears to be the only SUV sitting on a three quarter to one ton drive train. I bought this strickly for off roading and other than the 3 feet of over hang past the rear tires and the carburator It does quite well. One of you asked if I was comparing a 60 to a fj80 or a fzj80 and the answer is I dont know. I dont know what the differences are. I guess that could be another thread. I assumed the 80 was good vehicle, newer is not always better but I dont see Toyota cutting corners on these vehicles. The drivetrains are what makes a good fourwheel drive, So i guess my biggest question would be do the newer cruisers still run a heavy drivetrain. Thanks for you info.

Stock, maybe I would agree with you. The way yours is rigged, mine, and most others... well, one could hardly say they blend in.
