I've got 33's and 3.73s

On the road it is perfect.

I use mine on light trails. No rockcrawling.

If I crawled it the 5:1 1st gear would be nice.

With 4.11s you might be a bit high on the rpms but that $3500 pill would be hard for me to swallow the way I use mine.
 
@wngrog What's your take on how the 4sd is with 33s? Everyone is telling me I'm going to want to swap it for a h55, but I think it'll be fine.

You'll be fine if you do not drive much > 60 mph. Actually you'll still be fine even if you're rolling along at 70 mph, the 3FE will simply be spinning faster, up around 3k rpm. The 65-70 speeds are where you begin to want to drop those engine revs.
 
PSA for the day, if you're rebuilding a split-case, make sure you have a pilot bearing removal tool Or you will be finishing it the next day... No bread trick for this little b***h

@Bama4door came down today so we could fumble thru the rebuild. Just lack this bearing and we should be ready to throw the idler in and button everything up so he can jam it back up under his 62. Then I'm gonna get his notes and see how hard it would be to stuff one into the brown 80. :)

For this bearing you take a narrow bladed screwdriver and sharpen the bit then use it like a chisel driving the blade between the bearing and shaft. Do this in several places around the bearing. In the process you'll shatter the outer collar of the bearing but be able to extricate the thing.
 
We took a chisel, flat blade screw driver and a punch to it. We were able to mangle it enough to get all the roller bearings out and the inner shield piece that holds the rollers in place, but it wouldn't budge. @Godwin

I did this 2 weeks ago and the key was having a blade narrow, thin, and sharp enough to catch the top lip of the outer bearing casing then carefully driving the blade down and between the bearing casing and shaft bore. Once the casing is split in 2 -3 spots it will loosen and can be pulled out.

Gotcha. Do you know of a pilot bearing puller small enough to use (as a backup)? I was going to go rent one at autozone/oreillys, but looking online they look way too big.
 
I used the Godwin method. Mostly. I used a Dremel with a small grinding bit to first get one of the bearing walls thin enough to be able chip it apart.

I am finally going to hook up my snorkel.

Will have enough slack in it to get off the fill hole since I use that a lot :)

Waiting on a 3" aluminum tube from the ricer shop and some pimp clamps to tie it all up.

I resorted to the Dremel on the first t-case I did. Be careful using it as you do not want to grind away too much bearing and dig into the t-case shaft.

Keep at it, you'll get it out.

You're going to love it.

33's w/4.11s is the perfect all around mix. You won't need the H55 if you don't do much interstate driving.
 
The 60 has been in the shop a couple of days and I watched a little engine oil drip happening while I worked the engine bay and frame.

This afternoon I crawled under to see what's dripping.

The oil looked like it was a rear main. Slow drip. Meh. I'll wait until something else goes south.

Then I looked a bit closer and remembered my @Texican schooling.

My oil pan nuts took almost a full turn. All of them.

Over time the gasket shrinks and the nuts get loose and it leaks.

$1000 says no oil on the floor tomorrow.

I'm a serial over-greaser of ujoints and the underside of this truck proves it. I took a paint scraper and took off years of flung grease.

This was 3 dust pans full of s*** I scraped off.

2/3 of this truck will never rust......

@Bama4door glad I was able to lend a hand. @Godwin @FJ60Cam the Dremel and skinny screwdriver may work, but Cole pulled up and had a pilot bearing remover and a slide hammer and 3 whacks and out she came, 10-15 seconds tops. I am going to order one to put in my toolbox just to have.

We had to mess with it a little to get everything lines up and buttoned up, but if I ever do it again I think it could be done in a few hours. I learned a lot and have a handful of things I need to pick up and add to my toolkit. Thanks for letting me lend a hand.

Anybody got an h42 and a split case they don't need anymore? This kind of has me leaning at ditching the auto swap into the brown truck and going all 4spd on its ass. Thanks Cole... :D
