Has anyone put shoulder belts in the back seat of a 60? I gotta get my 5yr old out of the front, and appart from getting a 62..(again, the ex got it). I need some pratical ideas
Thanks

expensive route: SORs got a conversion kit.

otherwise, nothing wrong with hitting up the jyard for some random rear shoulder belts and getting a little creative.

i breezed over that section in the sor catalog but, it looked like we have the mounting holes in our cars for the belts.

lemme find a link right quick here...

recalls on rear seatbelt hardware

there was a recall on my '86 fj60 for rear seatbelt hardware. toy usa told me that recalls were VIN specific. I was checking on the recalls for my 60 and my 80. the fj60 also had a gas tank recall that forces the dealer to replace the gas tank. These are USA recalls and may not apply to non USA cars or other years. i think the gas tank recall was also for the usa fj62.

I called: 800-331-4331 (Mon - Fri, 5:00 am - 6:00 pm PT) found at: http://www.toyota.com/about/contact/..._ABOUT_CONTACT (toyota usa) . if you do not know whether these or other recall items have been repaired on your car, they are happy to help and keep records of all recall repairs by the VIN. they will need your VIN to check what recalls apply to your car and to see if PO had them done already.

the recall must be handled by a toyota dealer and all part replacements must be done by the dealer. they will not order the part until you schedule a service and they certainly will not give you the part to install yourself.

I got the belts that are linked in the post above, and I'm pretty sure my kids despise them. They require constant adjustment, or at least every time you use them, and if they're unclipped from the lap portion, they're hard for them to figure out. People that ride for the first time need a short explanation how the thing works, but it can't approach the simplicity and intuitiveness of the self adjusting kind. I shoulda grabbed the setup off a 62 instead.

I got a set of retractable ones for a 1990 FJ62 in my 86 60 and they work GREAT!
Do a search on rear seat belts and you'll find my input as well as others.
I believe I put the prices and part numbers in my post. I got NEW ones from CDan.
Well worth the effor and cost!

Before you start ordering stuff make sure you have the threaded hole in the pilar. My 82 did but from my understanding some of the older ones do not.
I also have the non retractable ones from SOR and they are a bit of a pain to use. That said, they required no welding or modification at all, and I installed all three rear belts in under 30 minutes.
Buying new seat belts, instead of 20+ year old used ones was important for me because, well, I really like all three of my kids.
Structural/safety concerns made the choice for me.

Ditto on everything crawling60 said, but on the upside they're a easy to install. I've had mine for about a year and I just got a pair from a 62 to replace them.

I think thats what I'n going to do is get a set from a 62, I did some checking and it apprears that the 60 has the threaded hole for the mounting bolt in the b pillar. I also sent an e-mail to Toyota to check the recalls on the front ones. After a couple of decades turning wrenches on aircooled VW's its kind of weird talking to a dealer
Volkswagen wanted nothing to do with them after they started making the watercooled models and had the dealers distroy all their spare parts. Blows my mind that I can walk in and order parts.
Thanks for all the input.

Harnesses

I bought a nice pair of Sparco three point harnesses off of Ebay for pretty cheap ($60 I think). I used the existing holes for each side of the belt, and sent the back strap up and over the rear seat, then back under. I drilled a hole in the floor for each side, and used some large flat washers and heavy duty bolts. I am totally satisfied with the setup; and once you get them adjusted the way you want, simple adjustments can be made by the waist belt and shoulder straps. No regrets.
