Not too much worth posting right now...
Got the spindles set and mounted, the shell gusseted, the swingouts welded...
I just ordered the gas springs and the latch from McMaster Carr today, so Im sort of held up till that stuff gets here. Started doing the grinding of the welds and smoothing those out.

Kinda boring stuff till I can build the jerry can and tire carriers, but I want the swing out arms FIXED (and not swinging out nailing me in the BALLZ) to get that stuff mocked up.

Im still at it!

FAAAAAWWWWK!
So I got the spindels set, and mouted up with the bearings and swing outs and all...wanted to check to see if there was any play in the bumper with the swingouts extended and weight bearing down on the ends...
YEUP! the ends of the shell rotate a bit when I get my fat ass on em.
Got an idea that should correct the problem....

Just FYI!

LOL!!! Gusset and gusset often....!!!!

FIXED IT!!!!!!!
insted of trying to describe it....Ill just take some pics tomorrow!
Bottome line is, I ended up completely boxing in the outer ends of the bumper, and welding a a 3/16 in plate/ gusset so its now completely housed in and moves NO WHERE! VERY EXCITED!
AAAAAAND, I now have a tire mounted!!!!!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:!
Still gotta play with that a lil bit. Im thinking about putting an angle in the vertical piece and pitching the tire into the rig of sorts....It seems to hang out quite a bit, actually a bit more than I had envisioned....The 2.5 in BS rims arent helping much for that either.
thus far, the tire mount has been the easiest part of the build!
I was dreading that, but it actually went fairly easy.

Nice job dude! One thing to keep in mind is that a tiny little flex is a good thing. Sometimes, too rigid of a component can lead to weld fatigue over long term.

So I rebuilt the tire carrier today...
put a 15* bend to lean the tire into the back of the rig a bit, and I couldnt be happier with it! I LOVE the way it looks, and it will also distribute its weight a lil better also (IMO).
Plus, it really cleared the tail light on the DS...
I just like it so much better!

NICE :bounce::bounce2:

I want a set of plans!!!:cheers::cheers:

Looks really good. The angle just about splits the difference between the vertical and the tailgate glass.

So was the flex problem with the carrier rotated back away from the tailgate?

Was there any noticeable sag with it in the closed position?

Will the end of the swing-out rest on anything?

(gettin' my learn on)

Yes, when it was fully extended with MY weight on it, the outer ends of the housing rotated.

Was there any noticeable sag with it in the closed position?

No sag noted, which Im extatic about, but I could use a little drop back there as it sits ass high. Its actually not THAT heavy....Im gonna drag the wifes scale out and see what it weighs.

Will the end of the swing-out rest on anything?

Yes, I going to put SOMETHING there for the swingouts to rest on.

YES...planning on bigger tires eventually. Im really diggin the TSL SX's in the 36in variety! It'll be a while though. I still may drop the height down a bit cuz I do have the room to do it.

(gettin' my learn on)

Ill help when the time comes for you. Not that Im an expert or anything, but I have takem my lumps on this project.

X2. Are you painting or powdercoating?

I am sending mine to the powdercoater this week.

Jack

I was just gonna prime and paint it...
Its gonna take its share of hits, so Id like the ability to touch it up when I need to.

Just out of curosity...how much did they quote you for that?

Anyone have any recommendations for the jerry can bins?
I was thinkin about just using 3/16 in plate for the whole shebang...

K

Nawce! your in the home stretch now..

I like the hellaified gansta lean on the tire , It looks like the same as mine (angle wise)
