I got my materials on Sat. to start my rear bumper build...
Went to Metal Masters again, and again...great service and fair prices!
I really recommend these guyz. i brought in my sketch and showed him what I was thinking, and he gave some recommendations. Anyway, heres the damage on materials.
6' peiece of 5x5 square stock 1/16 wall
1/2in x4inx10in flat stock x 2
6' of 3/16 in platex 6 in

85 bucks!

Plus he threw in some more plate to use for capping!

I went through 13 cut off discs and was even scrounging to finish the last bit of cutting to get the the point that Im at....
There is a TON of cutting. A plasma would have been VERY NICE!

Im very pleased with the progress so far.
I was gonna bail on the design, but I wanted it like the pic I drew, so I went for it.
Glad I did!

Here it is TACKED UP for right now. I have to nip some off here and there to get things to fit better so it will look cleaner and make for easier welding and clean up.

Lemme know if you all have any recommendations!

BTW, do you really NEED a trailer hitch if you have tow points?

Thanks,

Keith

Keith: Is your reference to "tow points" the same as recovery points/brackets? You should have recovery points IMO one way or the other (whether you decide to fab a hitch receptacle or not). Just cut some recovery brackets out of 1" plate...weld them onto your bumper right over or very close to the frame mount brackets. Let me know if you want to look at mine...or here for pic

OBTW: Nice job! Where do you carry your spare?

Is that strong enough or is that a typo? I am sure you meant 3/16". Anyway nice start dude, I really want to build one for mine too.

Dylan

Yeah...
typo!
I meant to change that.

Hey Dan,
the set up that slee/ you have is similar to what I have planned, only it 1/2 in plate and not 1in.
Ive seen a lot of other bumpers that have used the 1/2 in so I can only assume that it works fine!

Right now, I carry my spare in the bed of my rig, but I have plans for a rear swing out for the tire and jerry can.

As far as the hitch is concerned, I will not be towing anything, so I dont really see a need for it if I have the other tow points are there...
Unless you all know something that I dont about the hitch?
I CAN run one, but if Im not gonna need it...

While you may not be planning on towing anything, a 2" receiver is always handy for something. We have straightened tie rods, suspension links, etc. using the receiver. Plus you may decide to carry something extra on a trip or something and can use the mount to plug whatever into. Better to have and not need than to need and not have...

Washoe Metal has them already made in different lengths.

Great work! I can't wait to see how this comes out.

Washoe Metal is off McCarran between Gregg and Glendale. I don't know the street name but it runs parallel to McCarran on it's east side.

There are so many things that plug into a receiver hitch these days I can't see why you wouldn't have one. You could even get one of those cool skulls with eyes that light up. :flipoff2:

BTW you know you can always get stuff like cut off wheels from me. I have a butt load of wheels, grinding disk etc . My son is home right now so even if I'm at work there is usually someone at the house.

What they said...it would just be easier (relative term!) to fab it in now. Chances are you will be glad you added a 2" receiver at some point.

Funny thing...
I caught either the flu, or food poisoning yesterday, so on one of my MANY trips to "EL CRAPPER" I came across an advertisement for Washoe Metals in the paper!
It felt like I had a BUTT LOAD of abrasives...
Funny how that all tied in to the discussion.

Your welcome for the link and they do have latches just like most of the fabbed rear bumpers do they called a pull action latch and they seem to work the best for that application also the drawer slides have a 300 to 500 pound rating. Im planning on building a set of drawers for the 80 and one for my 40 as well will deff help out with storage in the 40 and the 80.

P.S Hey rusty you still have that spare fuel Tank or you dump that already ?
