Looking good Keith and that should strengthen it to the point that you wont have to worry about it getting beat to death on the rocks and x2 on Dans idea. So when ya building mine for my 80 ROFL J/K

I saw this project in person this morning.
As usual the workmanship is excellent. Kieth will have a lot of people asking him to build bumpers for them after they see his.

Ahhh yes ..

Hey keith I need a front bumper... :)

Thanks Dan, I appreciate the compliment!
I F'd around with the ideas that we discussed this AM, triangulating BOTH the tie ins and the reciever...There is no good way to match the angles required against the back side of the bumper for me to proceed with that direction.
I just couldnt get a good mating fit on that end because of the angles I made while constructing the shell....
So what I did was take the principals we had discussed, ran a brace from the BACK end of the reciever to the tie ins (like I showed you alternatively before you left). I will then gusset those for the added strength.
I understand that its not IDEAL, but...I do not have the resources, materials, nor the time to make that work to where I can fit it all properly.
Ill get pics tomorrow to make this clearer.
Thanks again for taking the time to come check it out and lend me some of your expertise personally.

FYI: Make your own hitch (you can buy solid blank material from the local trailer fabbers) and then you can move the pin back a little farther so that it is a bit easier to access. If you need to use my drill press your welcome to...

That's what I did on mine...needed a custom length so I built my own. For a little extra measure of safety since my MM175 doesn't have enough juice for the kind of penetration I wanted on this piece I let Sam TIG the actual ball plate to the hitch...but if you have a good 220V stick welder you should be able to get 1/2" penetration in one pass. And just so you know DOT gets real excited if you cause a highway issue with a non-DOT approved hitch...however a little common sense here goes a long way to eliminating an issue/risk from that perspective ;).

Are you working today or are you going to be in the garage all day? I might stop by...just didn't want to miss ya.

Hey Dan,
I was home all day, but I didnt see this post till this eve.
By chance, do you happen to know what the DOT requirements are for hitches?
Id be really curious as to how stringent they are.
Looking at the stock hitch that I had....all in all there isnt that much to it and its only mounted with 4, 1/2 in bolts. The material is entirely a 1/4 in, but there is nothing at all impressive about it.

Ill be screwing around out there tomorrow for sure!
Anytime you want, swing by!

So heres the "NEW" design!
My neighbor is a structural engineer, and as I was closing up shop this eve, I had him come over and take a peek and give his .02...
His biggest concern at this point is the weight of the swingouts when open, and he recommended completely boxing in the ends of the bumper up to the tie ins to keep it from twisitng on itself under load.
The good news was, that he indicated the the hitch area of the bumper is "bomb proof".... needless to say, I was quite happy to hear that.
So lemme hear what you all think!

Thanks for all of your help, input and tutilage on this build guyz!
I do really appreciate it!

Also, it was nice to see you espressoDan. It was nice that you stopped by to kick around the rigs and the garage!

You got it now Dude!

To tell you the truth I wasnt all that hot with the sprinkler pipe paralell. :meh:
Def liking the tringagle action.

Perfect job on the reciever face !
And your buddy knows what he is talking about with the box situation.
Are you still able to get all the bolts in?

Very nice job Keith and x2 on the ends of the bumper for strength and im up at the moment if your checking call or i can PM you. Also so everyone knows i know have an RTT on my Adventure trailer WOOT for me very nice tent with lots of room.

Yeah,
If I could have gotten away with it, Id have kept most of it boxed in, it just wouldnt work with how I wanted the bumper to sit. I tried.
However, I CAN get away with boxing in the lateral ends where the spindles will sit. Im figuring that Ill box it completely in as to keep debris out.
Actually I liked the pipe running paralel, but Im not an engineer either...I figure I should take heed to the recommendations of those like Ali, Rusty and my neighbor who do that crap for a living.
He was all psyched about it, was getting dimensions, material thicknesses etc. and was going to run some calcs on it...
Yes. the bolt pattern and bolt access is un affected by anything up to this point. I may have to get creative in doing the "boxing" of the ends though, like chop off a bit more from the uderside of the shell so Ill be able to mainatain that access. I may also weld the nuts to the 1/2 in plate so I wont have to mess around on the inside of the frame rails.

Great work! The gusset plates were a good idea.

I'm pretty sure your frame will fail before the hitch/bumper does.

Keith,

Have you tried to install the bumper to see if the holes still line up? Just making sure nothing has shifted with all the heat!!

Nice job BTW.

Yep...
Did that today. I did have to bore out one of the holes on the frame a lil, but not much.

Getting CLOSE!

One more thing that may be worth mentioning but you prolly know it already is the use of flapper discs vs grinding wheels. Flapper discs or even sanding discs (various grades) do a fine job of smoothing the corners and take bumps out w/o taking off lots of material. Just a FYI.

Keep up the good work.

Title change;
I modified the title a little, the 80 rear bumper build will also get the same treatment. The titles were to much alike and I thought it would make future searches easier if the LC series was in the title.

Hope you don't mind K.

Yep...
stocked up last week on both types from Harbor Freight:hillbilly:!
Not looking forward to the clean up.
Still have a ways to go before that happens though.

Thanks Ali!

Good idea!
