Keith,

Here's what I was thinking.
Keithrearbumper.jpg

That is almost exactly what I had in mind!!!!!
Ill be using tube insted of square stock for the x member though!
Its gonna be a bit of a trick though, cus its going to HAVE to run in the center of the mounting bolts where the frame ties in.

Thanks AA!
Nice work on the sketch!

K

Nice sketch, you some kind of engineer or something?:flipoff2:

I would also think in terms of trusses. You get a lot of strength with little weight when you add diagonal braces.

Rusty...
Could you expand on this please?
I was thinking something similar, but I wasnt sure how to go about it.
Are you saying that it should go like this.../\/\/\/\/\/\/\......spanning the whole lenght of the bumper? Do you think that 3/16 would be adequate for this?

Thanks for the help!

K

Hey Keith check out Kro-Built in reno they have d rings and shackles pretty good guys over there.Lookin Good bud keep it up. but might i make a smalll suggestion i would add some verticle plates inside that bumper for a little more beef unless im looking at it wrong looks like back side is open ? if so then add the plates if not disregard what i just said LOL

Dan

Thanks Dan,
That is what I was looking for...I want this thing to hold up when the time comes!

I don't have Ali's mad sketch skills.

Something like this _/|\__/|\_
connecting the cross members/bumper to the frame. The diagonals could be channel.

Glad to help out bud anytime if your lookin for anything else let me know bud and you can call me at 775-867-3796 anytime from 4 pm till about 9 pm or call my cell if the house phone is busy 775-530-4292

Awesome dude, I can't wait to embark on mine. I got side tracked with a transmissioin swap though. . .

Dylan

H55!?
Did ja get a toy box yet?

Congrats man!
Im freaking jealous!
I want low gears sooooo bad, I just cant afford any MAJOR expense right now for the rig!

So, does that go inside the bumper shell, or from the x member to the tie in/ tow points!
Im liking that idea for either.
Remember, Im a mere MURSE, and not an esteemed engineer like some of you are, so Im hanging on every bit of advice that I can get!

I appreciate it Dan!

Thanks,

Is this going to be OKAY?
I cut the hole for the hitch mount and shoved it through...
my concern is, that I wont be able to get the hitch pin in easily.
If I move it further out, the whole thing sticks way the hell out from the bumper that Im not too crazy about either.
What do you all think?
Remeber...there will be a x member tying the reciever into the frame tie ins.

Thanks,

K

couple more!
Again, if I move the pin hole in front of the bumper, it sticks out MARKEDLY!
Im diggin the semi flush look of the way it sits, im just concerned with accessing the pin and getting the cotter pin in.
The way it sits right now, it will work fine, except Id have to crawl under the rig to get to it...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well...since you originally stated you do not even have a current or imagined application for towing/receiver and decided to install the receiver for the 'just in case scenario...' I would set it flush and deal with the pin and clip on the very rare occasion you'll use the receiver in the future. My $.02.

I agree with Dan. Even when I towed a trailer I only needed to access the pin at the beginning and end of each trip. NBD

That's pretty cool - I hadn't seen it done that way before but I think I might use it later. It brings the ball closer to the bumper, which can limit how tight you can turn/back the trailer - still nbd if you're not towing to begin with. I wonder if you can get a longer hitch?

Hitch Height: if you think you're way higher than a 10" drop hitch scenario, then you'll probably tow very infrequently. In that case, shove the receiver all the way in!

My pin is behind the bumper and only on rare occasion did I think it was annoying. I made two keyholes to anchor the trailer chains but don't see to use them much. This is primarily due to the chains being too short!

Curious, why a round tube instead of square for the xmember? Notching a favorite hobby of yours? :-)

I agree with Rusty, stick some gusseting about half way between the shackle bracket and the receiver hitch to tie the four pieces of long metal together. 3/16" material should be adequate.

Looking good dude!

Keith,
Don't forget to incorporate some type of loops to attach the tow chains to in the event you do want to tow someday.

DesertLake...I have a solid extended hitch...they're available.

Your gonna have to give me a better idea as to what youre saying with the gusseting, cuz I feel like im missing it.
Ive got tube, but lmited amounts of square stock and the square stock will not fit in the center of the bolt holes. Im kinda limited in that respect for space on the tie ins. The only room that ill have to run the x member in the tie ins will be where the bolt holes are.

Wouldnt the tow points work for that application?

They could work...however you're chains will need to be that much longer/hang down because of the increased radius due to the attachment points. Not too big a deal I suppose...for as much as you are likely to tow it should suffice.

Here's a cross sectional view of your bumper. The gusset goes inside:
