Keith,

Here're couple of pics of mine to give you an idea of the hitch thing. My hitch receiver connects to another cross member with gusseting for super beefage. Philosophically, I only like to use the center hitch receiver for all recovery operations so hence the extra beef. This was tested several times in the Midwest mud stuckage. Suckage big time. The entire bumper uses all factory captive nuts and factory bolts. I didn't even upgrade the bolts or anything. I think there is something 22 bolts or some such thing! Yes, the factory aux gas tank fits under there too like oem!!

That looks to be pretty stout the way that was mounted with the x member!
Thanks for the pics! Giving me some good ideas!

Dig the Illinois plates too!:D

Went to Washoe Metals...
MEH!
Very pricey IMO. I got the 2 in x 12 in reciever section, and it was 36 dollars. Looked at the clevis shackles, and those were 20 bucks a piece. More than I expected.

Oh well...Ill see what I can do with it.

BTW, does anyone know what thickness shackles would be adequate to hook from the tow points? The 5/8in are rated at 4500 lbs.

Spend a little more money and get the alloy shackles (more strength for the smaller size)

I will have to check on the exact numbers and size..

NM plates are much better looking :D And, you only need ONE :bounce:

Good luck with your project; it's a fun one.

Anyone know if Totally off road sells the D shackles?
I got the bumper "ROUGHLY" mounted today before work...Still have some more cutting to do to get it to fit right....
Im gonna need those shackles rather quick at least to get the pin dia to drill a hole to fit.

Any recommendations if not!

Thanks

K

Isn't there a farm/ranch store in the area? How about a rigging/logging store? Where's a Farm & Fleet when you need one!!!

The alloy shackles That I like are:

The 3/4 shackle 7/8 dia pin 7 T WLL

Got it mounted!
here are the pics!
Still not sure as to how I want to run the hitch yet...I just wanted to get it on the rig first and work around from there...
However, Im feeling that soem re-enforcement will be necessary on/ around the tow points.
Looking for recommendations!

Heres the pics of the back side!
not diggin the feeling that the bumper will be esentially ONLY secured by the weld to the tow points.

Catch my drift?

I've been looking, but I can't find any old pictures of my hitch before we cut it up to get the gas tank out. Which brings me to my point- if you overbuild the hitch to where it connects to the frame at four points plus the bumper, you get some gas tank protection in the deal. But if your tank needs work, you have to cut out the hitch.

I likey lots! I take it that you have no plans for a wrap around to protect the Q panels? If you go this route, then you can attach outriggers from the frame to the wrap arounds for additional reinforcement.

For additional frame mounting, how about a hitch receiver into your current design? That'd give you additional mounting locations. Just a thought.

Actually, I DO have plans for wrap around protection and is why I made the bumper a bit wider. First things first though.
Im thinking about ( for the hitch) runnin a cross member between the tow points/ tie ins and adding the hitch in there...What do you think about that idea?
It would further stabilize the whole assy. and also lend more rigidity to the bumper itself?
Anyone see any problems with that, that I do not?
For the tow points, I might just add some gusseting to prevent lateral sway?
Id like to be able to jack the rear of the rig by the bumper if I need to...

Thanks for the input AA and Will.

Hey Keith check out Kro-Built in reno they have d rings and shackles pretty good guys over there.Lookin Good bud keep it up. but might i make a smalll suggestion i would add some verticle plates inside that bumper for a little more beef unless im looking at it wrong looks like back side is open ? if so then add the plates if not disregard what i just said LOL

Nice sketch, you some kind of engineer or something?:flipoff2:

I would also think in terms of trusses. You get a lot of strength with little weight when you add diagonal braces.

Amazing what Microsoft Paint can produce :D

Agree on using as much trusses (corner braces) as possible. Those shackle brackets will see very high amount of tension during recovery operations.

I don't know anything about the 60s but if there are factory holes with captive nuts available, I'd use those as much as possible on the bumper mounting.
