We are moving from FL to CA next month and I have been trying to figure out how to get the 60 there with us. We only have 2 drivers, one of us will be driving the moving truck and one of us our car (which has a/c) with our two cats. That leaves the 60 without a driver and frankly I would rather pull it or load it into the truck. The Budget and U-haul sites say the 60 is too heavy for the car hauler, although a 90s 4runner is okay so it must be pretty close. The 60 has steel rims and 33s but no additional aftermarket weight. Has anybody used the car hauler anyway? Do you have to load the car at the truck rental place so they know what you are hauling? Has anyone ever put one inside of the truck? I measured and it will fit but I would have to buy some ramps to be able to load it and the biggest truck only holds something like 7400 lbs but we don't have a whole lot of household items. Biggest thing being a Hammond organ which weighs a few hundred lbs. and tool boxes, air compressor, etc.

Any ideas? I don't really want to put it on a car hauler for 1200 dollars or more.

thanks, mike

just talked to budget and the max weight on their's is 4100 lbs. With 33s and rock crawkers I figure the 60 is at least 4500 lbs. They also said you couldn't load it into the truck. So looks like the only option will be to get the a/c fixed and drive the 60 with the cats in it and haul the G20 on the trailer.

thanks for the info Benji. When you say totally against the contract was that hauling the cruiser or the tie downs? what size tires were you running then? FL to CA is a long way so I am trying to do the best thing. I know I can drive it no problem but the G20 is a little more comfortable for a long ride and the a/c works! thanks again.

The other problem is, the wheel straps aren't going to fit around 33's on uhaul stuff.

Why not rent a tandem rear axle truck. You can load the 60, the other vehicle, and all your house stuff. Last year at CM, a Canadian guy drove one of those down from Vancover (sp?) with two cruisers inside.

uhaul car trailer

trailered my T100 with 33's on the U-haul car trailer from Montana to Virginia. They never saw my t100 going on it. I drove my truck onto the hauler, deflated the tires, put the straps on and reinflated my tires to the point that the straps were pretty tight. My truck looked a little big on there, but it worked fine. Just make sure you have air on the other end when you need to deflate, unhook, and drive it off. Just my .02. Yes, uhaul sucks, but limited options in Montana.

Live to Ski,
what suppliers rent a rear tandem axle truck? I haven't sen one yet.

calfj60,
moving along Hwy1/Big Sur.

Seems like a T100 would be lighter than a 60. I could tow my 65 GMC 3/4 ton on the trailer according to budget. But it is right around 4000 lbs. So it seems like some people have done it. I am kind of worried about the distance. It doesn't sound like any of my options/plans are optimal. At least I have a little while longer to figure it out. Thanks for all the brainstorming. I really need to get this one figured out.

fire by friction

A friend told me a near horror story about hauling a vehicle inside a U-haul. They packed all sorts of furniture around it and the thing damn near caught on fire. What happened was that some part of the car was rubbing against a piece of wood furniture constantly. I guess the vehicle was bouncing on its springs. Anyway, my buddy just checked his load after 50-100 miles and the whole truck was filled with smoke. Something to think about.

Technically you can do this, but you won't get any insurance help if something happens.

You can rent the big Uhaul box truck and the dolley/trailer. When you are fillng out the form tell them you are pulling the car on the dolley/trailer. Then when you get home find a "problem" with your 60 that makes it impossible to drive it to the new location.

That is what the uhaul guy told us when we went to pick up my 60 this past weekend. he said if i don't see what you are pulling up on the dolley i can't stop you.
