Are they any good?

I have a guy who wants trade me two of them complete with 4-speeds for my 1980 Chevy Blazer. They came out of Bread trucks that he parted out for the aluminum adn the rear axle.

He is checking to see if they have turbo's on them.

should be good, but the newer ones are big. Depending what they are they might be tough to put in a cruiser. Not that you only have the option of installing in a cruiser...

should probably move this over to the diesel tech section.

These are about 6 inches longer than a landcruiser 6 cyl. I think the smallest Isuzu 6cyl diesel is about 5.9 litres

Dude, I would take it. Even if you don't end up using them, a Blazer is a blazer (non capitol on purpose.) They are a dime a dozen. You could sell the engines if you don't end up using them, depending on condition, and buy another one.

Isuzu diesels are great.

I like Toyota better, but Isuzu is a close second in my mind. They are the longest running commercial diesel engine builder on earth.

I'm no expert on them, but I was recently at a truck show with a guy who is (and has been using Isuzu diesels since the early 80s in his field service trucks), and I'm impressed.

I'd certainly trade a blazer for them. Don't know what I'd do with them after that, but they're definitely more useful than a blazer.

Sounds like a 6BD1. It's the six cylinder version of the 4BD1, essentially Isuzu's version of the cummins 6B.

I know of a mid wheelbase 70 series that had a 6BD1T (turbo) fitted to it, reports came back of the owner breaking everything in the drivetrain at some stage, But I don't know what power level he had wound it up to.

Apparently the same guy fitted one to an 80 series with reportedly excellent results. Very big and heavy engine though, over 500kg.

Eh, I'd take the cummins in either case hands down. Over here, isuzu parts can be a bit of a problem. Lots of NPR stuff was dealer only. That NPR pretty much turned me off to any of isuzu's diesel offerings. Infernal dowel pin and that weird Onan 3.something liter six aside, it's really hard to kill a cummins.

Out of curiosity, what sort of four speed does it have? Is it an SAE bellhousing?

I think you can isuzu parts at any GM truck dealer... I think...

That's how it works in the rest of the world. There's also a large selection available on Ebay of all places.

The 6BD1's can come with an SAE housing, the bus and industrial versions I've seen do. But I haven't checked the bellhousings on their truck engines.

These engines are very tough, externally a little more compact than the cummins.

So should I pick these up or not? I will post pictures tomorrow when I go and look at them.

Where are the model number so I can post those as well.

Model number will be on the left side of the block. I'd expect it to be a 6BD1.
Older versions are the 6BB1, newer versions are the 6BG1.
The BB1 will be hard to find parts for now, the BD1 is still in production as an industrial engine, same for the BG1.

Thanks

Note: not sure if this concern to you or not .. but those engines are all posted above, and NOISY !!!

been said that .. love those 4.3 direct injection turbo .. are fast !

Good thing is they are lighter and quieter than a cummins. They are also a sleeved cylinder engine; this makes them much cheaper to rebuild than a cummins.

So should I pick these up or not? .

Depends on what you going to do with them. IMO they are too big and brutal for a cruiser

Well I did not get them because of mechnaical failures. My father bought both of them instead. One is going in his 8X8 Log skidder.

What failed mechanicaly? Wahts he do with a 8x8 log skidder
