What is the point when the recommended 5w-30 is so readily available?

It's for improved fuel economy number for the fleet - all the major car makers have made the switch. I'd stick with 5w-30 myself given that it's what the engine was developed against and what Toyota recommended originally, and in theory you should get better hot engine protection and viscosity. If you change the oil regularly it really doesn't matter either way though....

5w-20 might yield some better MPG's... probably < 1, if any.

If Toyota is truly stating 5w-20 is ok to run in the UZ engines, I would like to know as I have two in my garage :grinpimp:

New 2012 Sequoia and Owners manual calls for 0w-20.
Will probably not change what I have used for many years for my 2001 LX470 which is 0w-40.

The 5w-20s are showing good protection and can be good oils but I don't see it as a good value proposition for the 100. The UZ was designed with a 30 weight at operating temp in mind. It is not optimized for a 20 weight and will not get all the friction reducing benefits that the newer engines get from the lighter oil.

OTOH If it got marginally reduced protection I doubt it would be enough to notice over the lifetime of the engine.

I bet you I could take a dump and get the same mileage improvement.

Man, you must be able to really put some food away :+)

This is an ancient thread but I just had a knowledgeable guy (toyota mechanic) say that 5w-20 synthetic is the right oil to use in my 2006 LC. Even though I trust him explicitly I have read so many threads on Mud that say only use 5/30 that I am still hesitant to use the 5/20. Anyone else using 5/20? I have the access panels off and 8 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic 5/20 sitting in my driveway but I am hesitant until I know others are using it too lol.

Please, by all means, use thinner oils, they are so beneficial. You'll be my long term guinea pigs.
I will keep using stout lubricants for now.

Even UR engines outside of CAFE Zone recommend thicker oils. Shell and Mobil lubricant finder sites in Australia and UAE are your friends.

Ok. I just went and picked up 5/30 Mobil 1 high mileage synth at Walmart... Don’t want to be the guinea pig lol. Cheers

I was about to service my wife’s new 2019 RAV4 and it calls for 0w-16. I think the new 2020 200s may too. Surprised the heck out of me. Wild stuff.

Edit: For the record I use M1 0w-40 in my 100 and Toyota 0w-20 in my 200.

I wonder how the film strengths compare with those different oils. Anytime I see a high temp weight below 30, I tend to think that was OK'd strictly to help meet MPG requirements - not to meet durability testing.

I've started doing Blackstone reports on every oil change. I currently use full synthetic (0W30, 0W40, 5W30, or 10W30). Maybe I'll be gutsy and try out a 0W20 and see what Blackstone has to say after 7500 miles. Unlikely... but maybe.

Here's a nice article from Europe, from a few years ago, on 0W-16 oil. It's obviously all about fuel economy. I think they are moving slowly on this to be sure that engines fail just after the warranty period ends rather than just before.

Per Mobil1, it's just the 2.5L ( A25A-FXS I4 engine):
  • 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE, LE and XLE 4-Cylinder 2.5L
  • 2018 Toyota Camry L, LE, SE, XLE and XSE 4-Cylinder 2.5L
  • 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited 4-Cylinder 2.5L

  • 2019 Toyota Camry 2.5L

I really doubt Toyota would stack their reputation for reliability on a minor improvement in MPG. I think it's safe to say that if Mr. T recommends a certain oil in the manual, it's tested and proven. It won't fail just outside of warranty.

When in doubt, go with the grade in the owner's manual. Sounds like @suprarx7nut is all over the place with grades (but tests it), and I imagine would have made a deal of it if any of the Blackstone reports came back worse than others.

I accidentally used 5w20 in my 99 last time and it had a noisy start after being parked for 3 days. Scanguage did not indicate any change in operating temperature. In my experience 5w30 doesn't generate noisy starts unless it's been parked for over a week. I added some Lucas to thicken it up a bit until the next oil change. Haven't had any more noisy start ups or new oil leaks.
